Vikings end season with NSAA Quarterfin­al loss to Mayville State

WATERTOWN, S.D. – The Valley City State volleyball team ended its season Friday with a five-set loss to Mayville State in the NSAA Quarterfin­als at the Watertown Civic Arena, 2725, 23-25, 25-22, 20-25 and 15-6.

The Vikings and Comets took all three of its matchups this season to a five-set decision. After the Comets took sets one and three and VCSU won sets two and four, the Comets used a .375 attack percentage and 13 kills to take the final set 15-6. Mayville totaled 13 kills and just one error on 32 swings in the fifth set.

Valley City State finishes the season with an 11-17 overall record and went 6-8 in conference play. Mayville State improves to 17-17 on the season and advances to the NSAA Semifinals. The Comets will face No. 1 seed Viterbo tonight at 7 p.m.

Mayville had five players finish with double figure kills Friday led by Samantha Passa with 15. Elora Passa finished with a triple-double after posting 14 kills, 15 digs and 37 set assists.

Natalie Hadrava led all players with 50 digs for the Comets and Ashley Pyburn posted a gamebest seven blocks.

Four Vikings tallied double figure kills and an additional four players posted double figure digs in Friday's match. Bailey Nelson finished with a game-high 20 kills while Morgan Nelson chipped in 13. Morgan Freije added 11 kills and Danielle Hagler finished with 10.

JayCee Richter totaled a team-best 29 digs while Sadie Hansen added 23, Delani Clarke tallied 20 and Hagler added 19. Frejie led the block effort with four assisted blocks in the match.

Sadie Hansen posted 53 set assists for VCSU Friday, surpassing the 2,000 career assist mark. She now ranks No. 10 in VCSU history with 2,016 assists in the Viking uniform.

Bailey Nelson, JayCee Richter and Morgan Nelson also finish the season with impressive season stats. Bailey Nelson tallied 419 kills to rank ninth all-time for kills in a season.

Libero JayCee Richter finished her freshman campaign with 615 digs to rank fourth in VCSU history. Morgan Nelson ranks ninth for blocks in a season as she recorded 97 blocks in 2022.
