Country Focus: Walking down the high school halls again

- By Stacey Kunze-Lilja, VCTR Correspondent

I have enjoyed the warmer temperatures; however, the fog and freezing mist can stay away. The saying is that when we have a foggy day it will rain in 90 days. If the saying holds true, we will have a wet and soggy April. Next week, the forecast sounds down right brutally cold. I guess you don’t have to shovel cold.

Last Saturday, the Maple River speech team competed in the tournament at VCHS. I have not been back to the high school for twenty years since my ten-year reunion. I noticed lots of changes and additions. The walls are much more colorful with the two shades of blue and all the artwork throughout the school. One of the speech students claimed there was a “magic hallway”. After I stopped laughing, I asked him why. He told me every time he went down the hallway he kept coming out at a different spot. The hallway he was talking about is on the west side of the theater and it brings you out to the junior high locker area. Is it slightly confusing? Yes, since the hallway has lots of turns. Is it magical? Uh, no. I noticed the new lockers in both the junior and senior high. Today’s students don’t have the opportunity to either hip check a locker door or throw a shoulder in to it for the door to open. The location of my senior year locker is now a gaping construction hole. As I walked the halls in between judging speech rounds, I was trying to remember which teacher I had in which classroom. Lots of memories I forgot about came back to me.

Walking through the hallways reflecting on those years reminded me how far I’ve come and what a great foundation VCHS provided me.
