Country Focus: Celebrating a milestone birthday

- By Stacey Kunze-Lilja, VCTR Correspondent

My daughter turned the big 1-0 earlier this month. Double digits! She is growing up to be a conscientious, witty, kind, and creative young lady. To celebrate her milestone birthday, she asked for a bedroom makeover. Yeah, it’s time. So, she has diligently searched the internet for ideas and added items to my Amazon cart. Last Saturday, we shopped at Target for bedding. She decided on a faux fur comforter in different shades of gray. It is super cozy!

Her dresser is purple, so she wanted to paint that a light gray. Thankfully she didn’t want to paint the walls. I dread painting walls. The prep work with taping is probably the task I dislike the most. I’m impatient and it feels like it takes days to tape all the baseboards, remove the outlet covers and cover up anything else in the room. My husband has banned me from painting near ceilings after I put a couple paint smudges on our bedroom ceiling over six years ago. I enjoy painting furniture since the turnaround time is much quicker. Plus, now Aubrey is old enough and careful enough to help.

My mom and Grandma Verna are talented with the sewing machine. My sister has completed some beautiful cross stitch projects. Even my own mother told me not to take up knitting, crocheting, needlepoint or any craft that requires, in my mind, tedious work. I guess my crafty niche is refinishing furniture. I have completed some interesting pieces over the past few years. I’m grateful that Tom has some woodworking skills. Granted, he hasn’t used them since high school, but he’s handy, nonetheless. For some reason, he will not show me how to use the skill saw, chop saw, and the nail gun. He must have talked to Dad who warned him not to let me near those tools.

Hope you all stay warm next week. January will end eventually.
