Hi-Liner grapplers pin Devils Lake on the road

- By Paul McDonald

The Valley City wrestlers picked up a much needed Eastern Dakota Conference win over Devils Lake, picking up seven pins on the way to a 66-12 win. The win keeps the Hi-Liners hopes alive of making the State Dual tournament in two weeks.

Chase Coghlan put up a great effort against Wesley Fisk, the number six ranked wrestler in the state at 106. Down 4-3 heading into the third period, Coghlan picked up a penalty point to tie the match at 4 and forcing overtime. In the overtime, Fisk got a takedown to pick up a 6-4 win. That made it 3-0 Devils Lake and it was the only time they lead in the dual.

Tyson Klabo picked up the first pin of the night for the Hi-Liners with a fall over Caber Bryce-Volk in 1:47 at 113 to give the Hi-Liners the lead for good at 6-3.

Koltyn Grebel moved up to 120 and picked up a pin over Tucker Bennett at 1:09 of the first period.

Owen Lindstrom, who is ranked number two at 126, won by fall over Khruz Kappenman 38 seconds into the first period to get the Firebirds to within 12-9 lead. That would be as close as they would be the rest of the dual.

Tucker Johnson started a string of five straight wins for the Hi-Liners with a pin at 132. Hunter Undem picked up a pin at 138. Koye Grebel won by forfeit at 145. Espen Kunze picked up a pin 22 seconds into his match at 152. Nice way to celebrate the day before his 18th birthday.

Alex Rogelstad ended the string with a pin at 160. That would clinch the dual for Valley City as they would lead 42-9.

Tyson Hovland lost 7-1 to Braxton Rance at 170 to make the score 4212.

The Hi-Liners received three straight forfeits at 182, 195 and 220 to make it 60-12.

Scot Rohde then picked up a pin 22 seconds into his match at 285 to close out the dual 66-12.
