VCSU Softball’s late rally falls short against Minot State

MINOT, N.D. – A late surge for the Valley City State softball team fell short Sunday in a 10-7 loss to tournament-host Minot State University.

Sierra Crocker's solo home run in the sixth and sac fly in the seventh helped spark the late scoring for VCSU. Alyssa DePoorter drove in a pair of runs on a two-out single to center but the rally fell short with two runners left stranded at the end of the seventh inning.

VCSU is now 2-2 on the season and will travel to the Presentati­on College Dome for four games next weekend.

Minot State opened the tournament finale with eight runs in the first inning, highlighte­d by a 2-run double by Taryn Bennett.

Still trailing 8-0 in the top of the fourth inning, Riley Perryman hit a 2-run homer to open scoring for VCSU. DePoorter later drove in Makenzee Stone on a single to right-centerfiel­d to make it 8-3.

Minot State added a run in the fourth and fifth innings to lead 10-3 when VCSU made its late run.

Marissa Hawkins, Stone and DePoorter each went 2-for4 at the plate for VCSU and Stone added a triple on Sunday. DePoorter drove in three runs and Crocker and Perryman each drove in two.

Maddy Zander got the loss in the circle Sunday. She went 2/3 of an inning and allowed eight runs, seven of which were unearned. Brooke Gaudry worked 5 and 1/3 innings in relief, allowing two runs on nine hits while walking four and striking out seven.

Minot State's Taryn Bennett had two doubles and drove in two runs for the Beavers. Calley Olson pitched a complete game and got the win in the circle. She walked four and struck out five.
