Hi-Liner girl route south, boys fall on the road

Girls: Valley City 82, Fargo South 18

Valley City girls used a swarming defense and Fargo South found it difficult to get shots to fall despite getting good looks as the Hi-Liners downed the Bruins 8218 at the Hi-Liner Activity Center.

The Hi-Liners scored the first 20 points in the game. Brooke Eggermont’s three-point lay 1:38 into the game started the scoring for Valley City. The senior scored five of the first seven points for Valley City in the first 2:41. Sam Hatcher had a layup in transition then knocked down a three-pointer from the corner to give the Hi-Liners a 12-0 lead with 14:28 to go in the half. The 20-0 run to start the game for the Hi-Liners was capped off when Tesa Olson scored in transition and hit a turn-around jumper inside with 11:39 to go.

Fargo South got on the scoreboard when Talyn Hoffert made on of two free throws with 11:02 remaining in the half.

Valley City came right down and Carly Goven drove the to score and was fouled. She made the free throw to complete the old-fashioned three-point play to make 23-1 with 11:02 to go. Fargo South would not score the rest of the half and Valley City would end the half on a 30-0 run. Hadley Thoreson scored in transition to cap the run with 2.0 seconds left before halftime.

Brooke Eggermont started the scoring in the second half when she split the defense for two inside 53 seconds into the second half.

Fargo South would pick up its first field goal of the game when Hoffert stole the ball and went coast-to-coast for the layup with 16:38 to go. That bucket started a 6-0 run by the Bruins capped off by Hoffert who drove the lane for two to make it 52-7 with 15:38 to go in the half.

Tesa Olson hit a three pointer with 12:10 to go, that was the last field goal by a Hi-Liner starter. The last points from one of the starters was Eggermont’s two free throws with 9:12 remaining to make it 6811. The Hi-Lines got 24 points from their bench as twelve different players scored for Valley City.

Carly Goven led the way with 18 points and added five rebounds and three assists. Eggermont had 17 points and three assists. Also in double figures was Tesa Olson with twelve points along with three assists. Sam Hatcher added seven points and six rebounds. Faith Peterson had six points and a team high seven rebounds. Greta Goven, Kinlee Sufficool, Kailee Nielson and Madison Anderson all had four points. Goven had a team high four assists. Dacota Potratz, Hadley Thoreson, and Georgia Zaun each had two points. Potratz added five rebounds. The Hi-Liners C-Squad picked up a 79-19 win. Five players scored in double figures led by Madison Anderson with

16 points. Georgia Zaun had 15, Rylyn Johnson added 14, Dacota Potratz had eleven and Kadie Kocka had ten. Kailee Nielson added eight and Kinlee Sufficool had four.

Boys: Fargo South 77, Valley City 62

Fargo South jumped out to a 9-0 lead to start the game and never looked back on the way to a 77-62 win over Valley City.

Valley City got its first points on a basket by Arie Bratrud inside to make it 9-2 with 14:13 to go.

South’s lead would stay between seven and ten points until James Hamilton made two free throws to make it 27-15

with 6:10 to go in the half. That was part of a 17-8 run by the Bruins to open up a 16 point lead. Dean Grant scored an easy two inside to make 37-21 with 48 seconds remaining in the first half.

Carson Eggert would drive and score inside with 24 seconds left to make it 37-23. But Hamilton’s turnaround jumper in the lane with .8 seconds to go put the lead back to 16, 39-23, at halftime.

Aiden Jacobson hit a three-pointer from the top of the key to start the second half scoring seven seconds in to make it 39-26 South.

But the Bruins would go on a 12-1 run to open up their biggest lead of the game 51-27 three

minutes into the second half.

Valley City would have the first of two runs in the second half. The first was a 15-5 run to cut the lead to 5642. A Jacobson three pointer and a Sykora layup capped the run with 10:32 remaining in the half. The two teams would trade baskets over the next 1:38. Hamilton scored for South off the in-bounds to make 6347 South with 8:54 to go.

Over the next 5:36, Valley City would go on its second run, this one was 15-6 to cut the lead to seven. Carver Pederson three-pointer cut the lead to nine 69-60 with 4:40 to go. It was the first time the lead was under ten points since

the 7:42 of the first half when another Pederson bucket made it 22-15. Calahan Burchill made two free throws to make it 69-62 with 3:18 to go. But those would be the last points the Hi-Liners would score as South ended the game on an 8-0 run for the final margin 77-62.

Zach Sykora led Valley City with 18 points and added four rebounds and two assists. Burchill finished with 14 points and a team high seven rebounds. Aiden Jacobson had eleven points, five rebounds and three assists. Carver Pederson added eight points. Will Eggert had five, Carson Eggert had four and Arie Bratrud chipped in two. Reis Kriewald had three assists.
