Mr. Borg, we all want to protect our children from pornography however reading sex education books won’t cause you to become addicted to porn any more than having a beer causes you to become an alcoholic or visiting a Casino causes you to become addicted

-

A simple Google search would tell you that the primary reasons people become addicted to porn are not through exposure but rather mental health conditions, relationship problems, unrealistic views of sex, chemical imbalance, drug abuse, and physical and sexual abuse. If you want to solve a problem, you need to identify what is causing it first! You may be surprised to know that many people use porn as part of a healthy sex life and don’t become addicted. Reading “Let’s Talk About It” is not going to get you addicted to porn but addressing the real reasons people become addicted can prevent it.

You also talk about parental rights yet in the same breath you threaten our hard-working library staff with fines and jail time if they check out a book you don’t like to non-adults. It seems to me that you want the ‘right’ without the responsibility! After all, isn’t it up to the parents’ to monitor what the child is reading? Isn’t it the parents responsibility to monitor that child? If you want the right, then accept the responsibility. You the parent should be charged and fined, not the library staff. After all, parents’ rights!

And lastly being that you brought up abortion, let me say that one word en capsules the difference between you and me, respect. Your religion tells you that life begins at conception. I respect your belief and would never force you to choose abortion even if your 12-year-old daughter was raped or your 30-year-old wife finds out at 12 weeks that the fetus has severe physical abnormalities and carrying it to term would endanger her life. That is your choice and I respect that. You however do not give me the same courtesy. Jews, Muslims, and many liberal Christians as well as myself belong to religions that teach us that life does not begin at conception but is a process and until viable outside the womb, does not have rights that supersede the mothers. You would deny me my right to my religious beliefs. Shame on you sir! That is many things including... disrespect. Joseph DeMasi, Valley City, ND
