Country Focus: The excitement of the words “snow day!”

-

One more week and then it is March! Why does February seem to fly by, and January feels like the slowest month of the year? Of course, Mother Nature isn’t quite done with the snowstorms. It is North Dakota so we probably have another month to go or possibly longer. Great…

Nowadays, the line of communication from the school doesn’t provide my daughter the same anticipation of a school snow day. I’d watch the morning news show ticker tape at the bottom of the screen intently. KOVC would be playing in the background while I’m praying that school would be cancelled that snowy day. Most of the time the announcement ended in disappointment with school is still on, but rural buses won’t run. Ugh! Even with the weather forecasting technology, we can still get caught up in the storm and stranded on the roadways. Make sure you have your winter survival kit and more than a half tank of fuel in your gas tank. Knock on wood, I have not been stranded for an extended length of time in a vehicle. I remember putting together winter survival kits in school. A metal coffee can with a lid, a garbage bag, a can of Sterno, non-perishable snacks, matches, a candle and other items. Now, I make sure to have extra blankets, hats and gloves. With an upcoming blizzard, the grocery stores are busy with people stocking up on bread, milk and eggs. With the price of eggs today, I would skip that. When we have been stormed in for a few days, us and a couple other families in Tower City will get together for a potluck, so the kids can play, and the adults can visit. Good living in a small town.

Stay warm and as for the weather…this too shall pass.
