Jerome John Wieland of Dazey, ND, passed away February 22, 2023, at the age of 78. He died peacefully in his sleep with his wife, Peggy by his side after fighting liver disease for four years. The funeral Mass will be celebrated on Friday, March 3, 2023, at 10:00 AM in St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Dazey. There will be visitation on Thursday from 5:00 until 7:00 at the church. A prayer service will begin at 7:00. The services will be live streamed, then archived, on a link provided along with his obituary on his tribute page at www. lerudmathi­as.com. Jerome was born January 4, 1945, to Hugo and Nell Wieland. He was born and raised in the Dazey community along with his younger sibling, Jeanette. Jerome’s first school he attended was Sibley Trail one room schoolhous­e. He then went to Dazey rural school and attended high school at St. Catherine’s in Valley City, ND, graduating in 1963. He joined the National Guard shortly after graduating and served until being discharged in 1971.

He stayed active in the community through the church and his willingnes­s to help his friends and neighbors. Jerome became a member of the church board and made sure to be a part of everything he could, including being an usher at nearly every service he attended. He was also a part of organizati­ons such as the Lake Ashtabula Owners and Users Associatio­n, the Elks, and board of directors for NoDak. Jerome was a founding member of LAOUA as well as the treasurer. He served on the school board of BCN school for 8 years.

Jerome was raised on the farm from birth and bought out his father and a small section of land his sister was given in the 1970’s. In June of 1978, he met his future wife, Peggy, and her daughter. Jerome and Peggy were married and had three sons together, Aaron, Brian and Kirk. Jerome went to Northweste­rn Tech to obtain his CDL a couple years after finishing farming.

He enjoyed being outside the most. In his younger years when Lake Ashtabula was formed, Jerome along with many cousins and friends but 500 gallons through his first boat and motor water skiing, pulling two at a time, all within the first summer. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and loved to take anyone out on the pontoon. He loved spending time with family and friends and brought his faithful pal, Axle the dog whenever he could.

Jerome was preceded in death by his parents; aunt, uncle and a young cousin. He is survived by his wife, Peggy; step-daughter, Melanie (Terry Houle); sons, Aaron, Brian (Roslyn), and Kirk; grandchild­ren, Alexis, DaShae, Zander, and Alara; sister, Jeanette Persons; and nephew, Jeff and his family.
