VCSU Viking volleyball defeat Warriors in 4 sets

VALLEY CITY – Three Vikings recorded double-figure kills as Valley City State took a 3-1 win over Waldorf Saturday at home by final set scores of 25-12, 27-25, 25-11 and 25-16.

Bailey Nelson paced the offense with 15 kills while Danielle Hagler added 14 and Mardi Scutchings posted 11. The trio also posted three assisted blocks apiece for the Vikings.

VCSU improves to 15-4 overall and 3-1 in the North Star. Waldorf drops to 10-6 on the season and 0-5 in conference play.

Waldorf managed to take the second set of the match after posting 14 kills and capitalizi­ng on nine Viking errors. Otherwise, the Vikings outplayed the Warriors in all major stats Saturday, leading in kills (57-43) aces (5-2), blocks (10-5), assists (53-41) and digs (74-68).

VCSU's Sadie Hansen posted a double-double with 44 set assists and 11 digs, and added three kills and a pair of assisted blocks to her stat line. JayCee Richter led the defense with 21 digs, and Delani Clarke and Ellie Rush chipped in 11 digs apiece. Clarke added a game-high four service aces for the Vikings.

Morgan Freije's effort at the net continues to help the Vikings as she led all players with six assisted blocks and tallied eight kills Saturday. Waldorf's Charlotte Wright posted a team-best 10 kills on .450 hitting Saturday while Kaylee Kidd recorded a game-high 23 digs. Emma Hovenga tallied 22 set assists and Reinya Balderson added 16 assists for the Warriors. UP NEXT: VCSU continues conference play on the road next weekend. VCSU travels to No. 15 Bellevue for a 2 p.m. matchup on Friday, and plays at Dakota State at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
