The way the first half went, you would not think the game would end up being a 26 point win for Maple River. But the Raiders started the second half on a 12-0 run to break the game open on the way to a 75-49 win over Richland in girls basketball at the Colts gym.

There were ten ties and ten lead changes in the first half, five lead changes and four ties in the first quarter and five lead changes and six ties in the second quarter. “This turned into an unlikely shootout!” Head Coach Nathan Hoots said after the game. “After combining for 77 total points in our first matchup of the year in December, we combined for 72 points in the first half alone in this one. They made shot after shot against us early, but we were able to respond offensively against a vastly improved Richland team.”

The first quarter was back and forth. Adyson Hannig scored inside 38 seconds into the game to give the Raiders the early lead. But the Colts answered less than 30 seconds later when Alayna Schmitt scored inside and was fouled. She completed the three point play giving the Colts the lead 3-2.

The game of leap frog began. On the next eight baskets, the game changed hands four times. A floater by Violet Richman gave the Raiders the 4-3, that was the first lead change. The last one came when Lillian Miranowski scored on a runner to give the Colts the lead 12-10 with 3:23 to go in the first quarter. Maple River’s Claire Ihry kept the game from getting away with two three-pointers in the final 1:38 of the first. The score was 20-18 Richland after one.

More of the same happened in the second quarter. Ihry hit two three-pointers in the first 1:12 of the quarter to give Maple River a 24-20 lead with 6:48 to go. But Richland would go on a 6-0 run to regain the lead, 26-24 after Janna Taszarek hit a short jumper with 4:47 to go in the quarter.

From that point on there were three more ties and five lead changes. Those five lead changes all happened in the final 2:16 of the quarter. Violet Richman made a three-pointer from the top of the key with 49.7 to go in the half to give the Raiders the lead back at 36-34. That was the last lead change of the game. That basket started what ended up being a 17-0 run by the Raiders that went into the third quarter. It ended when Adyson Hannig made a free throw to make it 50-34 Raiders.

The Colts would not get any closer than 13 points the rest of the way.

The Raiders had a great mix of inside and outside with Ihry, Richman and Hannig. “We had 3 girls in particular step up in different parts of the game to lead our offense,” Coach Hoots said. “Violet Richman did a great job operating in the mid-range in the first half, Claire Ihry hit 4 big time 3’s in the first half, and Adyson Hannig had 15 of her game high 29 points in the third quarter.” The Raiders defense came up big in the second half. “Most importantly, our girls showed up defensively in the second half led by Carly Hovelson’s six steals which led to us scoring 23 points off turnovers.,” Coach Hoots said.

Adyson Hannig had six rebounds to go with her 29 points. Violet Richman had a great floor game as well with 22 points, eight rebounds, five assists and three steals. Claire Ihry had twelve points and two steals. BriElle Killoran had five points, three steals and two blocks. Stella Statrom scored four late in the game off the bench and Iris Richman scored three points, had six rebounds and three steals. Carly Hovelson also had five rebounds to go with her six steals.
