- Howard Langemo

The funeral service for Howard Langemo will be at 11:00 AM on Friday April 5th, at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Valley City. Visitation will be from 9:00 – 11:00 AM at the church. Burial will be in Woodbine Cemetery in the spring. Howard went to be with his Lord on March 27, 2024, at the age of 98.

Howard Warren Langemo was born on January 7, 1926, on the Halvor Langemo and Ida (Maasjo) Langemo family farm home near Fingal, ND. He started grade school at the age of five, attending a one room school in Norma Township. He went on to graduate from Valley City High School in 1942.

That fall he enrolled at Valley City State Teachers College. Late in 1945 he was drafted and inducted into the U.S. Army at Fort Snelling, Minnesota. He later became a rock-climbing instructor at Fort Carson, Colorado. Howard entered North Dakota Agricultur­al College in 1947, later earning his degree. On November 21, 1948, Howard married the love of his life, Marlys Jean Burgeson at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church. Howard and Marlys raised three sons, David, Daniel, and John.

Howard began a teaching career in Valley City as a Veterans Farm Training Instructor. In 1955 he embarked on a 35-year very successful career with State Farm Insurance. He truly embodied the State Farm “Good Neighbor” by being very active in numerous church and community boards and functions. Howard was a member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, Valley City. He was a seventy-three-year active Kiwanis Club member. Howard enjoyed his projects at the Barnes County Museum and his time at VCSU athletic events. He was an avid wood worker making beautiful doll houses, wood wagons, Viking ships, along with thousands of Christmas ornaments which were joyfully given to others. Bridge and cribbage card games, Sudoku and crossword puzzles were other favorite past times. Over his entire life he enjoyed staying close to his loving Heavenly Father through Bible studies. He had a great sense of humor, articulate with words, humble, kind, caring, served others with joy, always looking out for others before himself. He loved having time with his grandchild­ren and great grandchild­ren!

Howard is survived by his sons David (Laura), Daniel (Jeri) and John (Sonia), 8 grandchild­ren and 11 great grandchild­ren. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, and his 13 brothers and sisters: Marie, Martha, Peter, Inga, Arthur, Henry, Edwin, Erven, Herman, Walter, Lillian, Leone, and Ruth.

Memorials may be designated to Howard and Marlys Langemo Scholarshi­p Fund o/c of VSCU Foundation, Our Savior’s Foundation or Barnes County Museum.
