Vikings win six events at Al Bortke Open

BISMARCK, N.D. – The Valley City State University track and field team won six individual events, and the Viking women won a team title Saturday as VCSU competed at the small Al Bortke Open hosted by the University of Mary.

The Viking women won five events and finished with 83 team points, narrowly edging University of Mary (81 points) for first place.

Saturday’s meet was small with several partial teams competing. Athletes from VCSU, University of Mary, University of Jamestown, Bismarck State, Minot State and NDSU were all in attendance. The Viking men scored 43 team points and finished in third place. Team points were awards for the Top 4 places in each event.

High temperatur­es hovered around 40 degrees during the meet, and the majority of the field events were held indoors.

Cameron Champagnie won the men’s triple jump, leaping a personal-best distance of 13.81 meters (45 feet, 3.75 inches).

The Viking women won five events, highlighte­d by a pair of victories from Jade Azure. She won both the shot put (11.58 meters/38-0) and the discus (35.19 meters/115-5) on Saturday, and also took second place in the hammer throw.

Kendra Odegard won the women’s hammer throw with a toss of 38.30 meters (125-8). Freshman Karina Olson won the women’s 100-meter hurdles, finishing in a time of 15.24 seconds – the second fastest time in school history. Senior Jasmine Barnes won the women’s 1500 meters, finishing with a time of 5:05.79.

Up next: Valley City State is schedule to compete on April 12, but the schedule is subject to change based on weather over the next two weeks.
