Hi-Liners win season opener over Wahpeton

The Valley City HiLiners scored an unearned run in the bottom of the fourth to break a 2-2 tie on the way to a 6-2 win over Wahpeton in the home and season opener for the Hi-Liner baseball team. Wahpeton won the EDC Conference tournament last season and took second at state. Wahpeton got on the

board first with two runs in the top of the first inning. The Huskies scored on an rbi single by Brayden Steffens and a rbi triple by Jayden King.

But the Hi-Liners countered with two runs in the home half of the first. With one out and runners on second and third, Will Schwehr grounded out to short. On the play Ethan Miller scored, and Corbyn Powell came in on an error by the Husky first

baseman to tie the game at 2.

In the fourth, Powell led off with a single to center. Will Schwehr walked. With Bryson Heck at the plate, Powell stole third, when the throw by catcher Nicholas Langenwalt­er got away, Powell scored and Schwehr moved up to second.

The Hi-Liners added two more runs in the fifth. With the bases loaded and two out, Schwehr singled to center scoring Miller and Jack Samuelson to make it 5-2 Valley City.

The Hi-Liners added another unearned run in the sixth on a error by catcher Langenwalt­er

trying to catch Carver Pederson from stealing second. Trevor Fetsch scored on the play, making it 6-2 Hi-Liners.

Corbyn Powell led the Hi-Liners by going 2 for 3 with two runs scored. Ethan Miller, Will Schwehr, and Trevor Fetsch were all 1 for 2. Miller scored twice, and Schwehr drove in three runs. Bryson Heck was 1 for 3 and Jack Samuelson was 1 for 4 with a run scored.

Miller picked up the win on the mound. He went four innings, allowed four hits, two earned runs with a walk and four strikeouts. Carver Pederson pitched three shutout innings to

get the save. He allowed two hits with two walks and five strikeouts.

Valley City travels to West Fargo to play the Packers on April 16th.
