Hi-Liner Baseball drops pair in EDC

The Valley City baseball team played a pair of games in Eastern Dakota Conference action in a split doublehead­er. The Hi-Liners played Fargo Davies at Davies as a makeup for a game postponed on April 19th in Valley City. The Hi-Liners then headed to West Fargo to play the regularly scheduled game with the Packers at Young Field.

Valley City dropped both games, losing to Davies 10-4 and to West Fargo 15-4

Fargo Davies 10, Valley City 4

Despite the game being played in Fargo, Valley City was the home team since the game on April 19th was scheduled to be played in Valley City.

Fargo Davies jumped out to a 4-0 lead with four runs in the top of first inning.

The Hi-Liners got a run back in the bottom of the first when Jack Samuelson hit the first home run of the season for Valley City, a solo shot to center field.

The Eagles would score two more runs in the top of the second inning to take a 6-1 lead.

Valley City made it 6-3 with two unearned runs in the bottom of the fourth. Samuelson would single to lead off the inning. With Corbyn Powell batting, Samuelson would reach third on a wild pitch. Powell reached on an error, scoring Samuelson to make it 6-2 Davies. Powell stole second with Will Schwehr batting. Schwehr would walk then steal second, Powell came in when the throw to second was cutoff and they tried to get him at home but the throw was off the mark moving Schwehr to third with the score 6-3. But a strikeout and a line out would end the inning.

The Eagles scored four unearned runs in the top of the fifth to take a 10-3 lead.

Valley City got a run in the bottom of the seventh when Bodi Haglund, who reached on an error, scored on

Trevor Fetsch’s double for the final margin.

Jack Samuelson was 2 for 3 with two runs scored and an RBI. Will Schwehr was 1 for 2 and Trevor Fetsch was 1 for 3 with an RBI.

Carver Pederson took the loss on the mound. He allowed five hits and six earned runs in three innings of work. He walked one and struck out one.

West Fargo 15, Valley City 4

The Packers had two big innings to score most of their runs in a game that ended early due to the mercy rule.

The Hi-Liners got on the board first with two runs in the top of the first. Ethan Miller started the game with a double and Jack Samuelson walked. With Corbyn Powell at the plate, Miller scored on a wild pitch. After a couple of strikeouts and a walk to Will Schwehr, a passed ball put runners at second and third. Samuelson came in when Andrew Sykora reached on an error, making the score 2-0 Valley City.

But the Packers sent ten men to the plate and scored six runs in the bottom of the first. A three-run double by Luke Finn was the big hit in the inning for the Packers.

They would add another run on Leyton Hofland’s single in the second to make it 7-2.

West Fargo sent 13 batters to the plate in the third and score seven times, making it 14-2. They would add another run in the fourth to make it 15-2.

Valley City scored twice in the top of the fifth on a two-run single by Andrew Sykora, scoring Powell who tripled and Schwehr who walked. But a couple of ground outs ended the game.

Ethan Miller was 2 for 3 with a run scored. Will Schwehr was 1 for 1 with a run scored. Corbyn Powell and Andrew Sykora were both 1 for 3. Powell scored a run and Sykora drove in two.

Bryson Heck gave up four hits and six earned runs in his one inning of pitching to take the loss.
