Hi-Liner softball falls to Sheyenne

West Fargo Sheyenne had two big innings on the way to a 26-7 win over Valley City in Eastern Dakota Conference softball in West Fargo.

The Hi-Liners had a season high eight hits in the game but it wasn’t enough against the Mustangs.

Valley City scored first with a run in the top of the first. Hadley Thoreson led off the game with a triple, then came in to score on Bailey Leroux’s double. But Sheyenne’s Presley Tvetter was able to get out of the inning without further damage.

The Mustangs scored three in the bottom of the inning to take the lead.

Kate Geiszler’s two-run single broke the 1-1 tie, giving Sheyenne the lead, a lead they would not give up.

Geiszler’s RBI triple scored a run in the second, making it 4-1 Mustangs.

In the third, Valley City added a run when Thoreson led off with a single, then moved to third on an error by Sheyenne’s Lauren Schauer on Bethani Schuldheis­z’s ground ball. Leroux grounded out, scoring Thoreson to make it 4-2 Sheyenne.

But the bottom of the third, the Mustangs exploded for 15 runs on six hits. They sent 21 batters to the plate in the inning. Tvetter three-run home run was the big hit in the inning. When the inning was over, Sheyenne led 19-2.

The Hi-Liners would come back in the top of the fourth and score five runs. Ashlynn Hartsell single scored Lauren Larsen who started the inning with a single. Then with two outs, Thoreson singled in Sydney Larsen who had walked. With the bases loaded, Leroux walked, scoring Hartsell to make it 19-5 Mustangs. Kinlee Sufficool’s single scored Brielle Dulay and Schuldheis­z, making it 19-7.

Sheyenne would add seven more runs in the bottom of the fourth. A run scored on an error. Madi Aadland had a two-run single, Katelyn Bishop drove in a run with a single, Aadland scored on a sacrifice fly, and Schauer drove in two with a double for the final tally.

Hadley Thoreson led the offense going 3 for 3 with two runs scored and an RBI. Bailey Leroux was 1 for 2 with three RBI. Kinlee Sufficool, Lauren Larsen, Addie Jewett and Ashlyn Hartsell were all 1 for 3. Sufficool had two RBI, Hartsell drove in one and scored one, Schuldheis­z, Sydney and Lauren Larsen all scored once.

Valley City is now 0-2 in the EDC and 0-3 overall. They Hi-Liners are at Fargo South on Thursday, April 25th then home against Devils Lake on Friday, April 26th.
