NEW JERSEY PERFORMINGPE ARTS CEN­TER, NE­WARK, AUG. 26 “Tonight, we ce­cel­e­brate our queens,” the evening’s host, Queen Lat­i­fah, an­nouan­nounced from the stage. And that they did, with awards han­de­handed out to Janet Jackson, Mary J. Blige, Naomi Camp­bell, Len­lena Waithe, Me Too founder Tarana Burke and leg­endary chore­og­ra­pher­chor Ju­dith Jame­son. “We have to make sure that all blackb women are em­pow­ered and that we all own our mag­ic­magic,” Camp­bell said. Waithe spoke of her re­cent head­line-mak­mak­ing de­ci­sion to cut off her hair. “I de­cided to be free,” she said. “For me it was hair. For you it might be some­thing elselse.” “Black Girls Rock!” airs on BET on Sept. 9.
