Expansion Under Way for Culver Studios

- PAT SAPERSTEIN

Culver Studios has broken ground on its large-scale renovation, with Amazon Studios signed up for 70% of the property. Owners Hackman Capital Partners will enlarge the complex from 358,000 square feet to more than 720,000 square feet, including soundstages and offices. Founded in 1918 by producer Thomas Ince, the studio has housed productions including “Gone With the Wind” and “Citizen Kane.” The renovated studios will preserve the Colonial mansion and five bungalows from the original Ince Studios. Five new office buildings and two new parking structures will provide plenty of space for Amazon employees, who will occupy 530,000 square feet of the total Culver Studios space. Hackman recently bought CBS Television City for $750 million.
