The Academy has a long love affair with marquee movie stars taking a maiden voyage behind the camera, with actors-turned- directors like Robert Redford, Kevin Costner and Greta Gerwig landing in the mix for their first films. Cooper has an excellent shot at joining their ranks with his directorial debut, which has earned just south of $400 million worldwide. Cooper has already racked up Golden Globe and Critics’ Choice Award nominations for best director, as well as recognition for his acting and two Grammy nominations for his songwriting in the film.
