For any­one who saw Lan­thi­mos’ break­through “Dog­tooth” back in 2009, the idea that he would some­day be men­tioned as a best direc­tor Os­car fa­vorite less than a decade later would have seemed just as ab­surd as the dark twists that dis­tin­guish his films — that the film was even nom­i­nated for best for­eign-lan­guage film was wild enough on its own. But “The Favourite” saw the direc­tor earn the high­est per-screen-av­er­age of the year in its open­ing weekend, and col­lect recog­ni­tion from AFI and the BIFAS, as well as the grand jury prize from Venice.
