Screenwriter Daniel Stiepleman says he expected his pic about Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg to be “desperate and seething” because it was mostly set in the 1970s and everything he knew about that decade came from the movies he watched. But Ginsburg, his real-life aunt, told him that “it was joyous” and “we felt empowered.” Stiepleman was able to add a bit of levity, such the scene in which Ruth (Felicity Jones) nervously enters the ACLU offices only to have legal director Mel Wulf (Justin Theroux) reveal that — small world! — they were old summer camp friends.
