‘Mapplethorpe’ Premiere

The Robert Mapplethorpe biopic marks documentarian Ondi Timoner’s scripted feature directorial debut. “We had 19 days to shoot it, so sometimes I just had to wing it!” she told Variety. “But in documentary, you constantly have to think on your feet, and as an editor, I was especially prepared.” Matt Smith stars as the late artist. On prepping for the role, he said, “You work as hard as you can on the research phase, and you make that as detailed and focused as possible, and then try to be as inventive as you can on the day.”
