Take Afternoon Tea at the Peninsula

- BY KATHY A. MCDONALD

Trade the bustle of Filmart for a tranquil afternoon tea at the 300-room Peninsula Hong Kong, served daily from 2-6 p.m. The tradition began in British colonial times and retains much of its original characteristics within the Peninsula Edwardian motiffilled lobby, opened in 1928, notable for its soaring celling, potted palms and ivory columns topped by gilded garlands and ornate carved wood molding.

The premium tea selection has something for every tea enthusiast. The signature fair-trade certified Peninsula Afternoon Blend combines fragrant Indian black teas and is one of five classic loose-leaf teas offered. Flavored teas are a mélange of spices and flowers: citrus oolong, cardamom and saffron black tea, and a hibiscus flower blend are three of the menu’s uncommon assortment.

A three-tiered tray of the savory and sweet bites is the prominent element of the famed teatime. Raisin scones are accompanied by clotted cream and strawberry jam; finger sandwiches include the traditional cucumber and the inventive smoked salmon and guacamole. The sweet finish comes from the hotel’s renowned pastry kitchen. Hand-made fruit tartlets, eclairs, mini cheesecakes and camera-ready confections top the tier.

Presentation and service respect British high tea traditions. Servers arrive in white jackets; cutlery is highly polished silver and only the finest bone china is used.

However, there’s more to the menu than tea and cakes, there’s also Champagne from the Peninsula’s own bespoke label as well as Kristal caviar. Live jazz is another accompaniment.

Weekends through June, the hotel offers its high tea service on a boat. Afternoon Tea on the Harbor is presented on the Star Ferry, as patrons cruise Victoria Harbor and sip on the rarefied sweet and savory treats. Champagne and caviar are also available to toast the celebratory 105minute journey.

The Peninsula claims two blockbuster film credits: “The Man With the Golden Gun,” starring Roger Moore as James Bond, and Christopher Nolan’s “The Dark Knight.” The most unique perk for hotel guests: a fleet of 14 green Rollsroyce Phantoms are available to whisk them around town.
