The White Doe Inn is located on Sir Walter Raleigh Street in Manteo, NC, on Roanoke Island. According to the inn’s website, the name “White Doe” arises from the legend of Virginia Dare, the first child born in Sir Walter Raleigh’s Roanoke colony. Legend claims that Virginia was raised by the Croatoan tribe, until an old medicine man transformed her into a white doe.
