Crushing the competition

A little more than three weeks into the 2014 and the Gordon Lee Lady Trojans already look in mid-season form.

The Gordon Lee Lady Trojans blasted three more opponents last week, including two Region 7-AA foes, as they built on an impressive streak.

The Navy-and-White entered this week having won six consecutive games and the last five by shutout. They have outscored those five opponents by a combined 55-0, including a 5-0 victory over seven-time defending state champion Buford on a neutral field.

“We’re getting the job done up and down the lineup,” said head coach Dana Mull. “Each day it seems like a different person is getting it done and it’s great when you can count on everyone. I don’t want to peak too early. I want us to keep improving, but we are on the right track to get to where we want to be.”

The Lady Trojans got another big afternoon from junior Emily Armour in an five-in- ning win over the Class AAAAA Lady Colonels in a non-region game played at Lee University last Monday.

Armour allowed just one hit and fanned 10 while helping herself at the plate with a threerun homer in Gordon Lee’s six-run third inning. Melissa Duran and Addi Taylor each went 2-for-3 with a double in the Lady Trojans’ ninehit attack.

The Lady Trojans jumped back into region play on Tuesday and needed just five innings to punish the Blue Devils in Floyd County.

Gordon Lee did all of its damage in just two innings. An eight-run third inning put them comfortably in front before a seven-run fifth inning put them in position to finish early.

Freshman pitcher Canaan Burnett made sure the runs held up as she struck out eight and allowed just one hit in the complete game win. Tiffany Holland was 2for-3 with three RBIs, while Taylor also drove in three runs. Gracey Kruse went 3-for-4, while Bailey Miller and Courtland Middleton each had two hits as Gordon Lee finished with 15.

Back in Chickamauga on Thursday, the Lady Trojans improved to 8-1 overall and 3-0 in Region 7-AA by whipping the visiting Lady Eagles in four innings.

Gordon Lee led 5-0 after one inning, tacked on a run in the third and invoked the run rule after a six-run fourth inning.

Holland, Middleton and Taylor each went 2-for-3. Taylor had a pair of doubles and knocked in four runs on the night. Middleton had a triple and two RBIs.

Duran and Shay Wooten drove in two runs each, while Kruse hit her second home run of the season, this one an inside-the-park version.

It was more than enough run support for Armour, who gave up just one hit and struck out eight.

The Lady Trojans are slated to play at Dade County Tuesday at 5 p.m. in a region game.

Gordon Lee will take part in the Cherokee Invitational next Friday and Saturday.
