Wallin quiets Cartersville with no-hitter

- By Scott Herpst

The Ridgeland Lady Panthers scored eight times in a Region 7AAAA home win over Cartersville last Tuesday night.

Thanks to Allison Wallin, it was seven more runs than they needed.

The sophomore, who tossed a perfect game last season, picked up her second trophy ball with a six-inning, sixstrikeout, no-hitter.

“I was really on tonight,” Wallin said. “I was opening my hips up a lot better than (my last start) and my screwball was working better. It feels great and it’s fun to pitch when you have this type of offense and defense behind you.”

The run support was provided by Amy Hill and Courtney Mooneyham, who accounted for the eight RBIs. Hill was 4-for-4, while Mooneyham finished up 2-for-4.

Courtney Ketner led off with a single and stole second before scoring on Hill’s first hit of the game and Hill’s RBIdouble in the second plated Emma Arthur, who doubled earlier in the inning.

Ridgeland broke things open in the fifth as Mooneyham’s two-run double was followed up by another RBI-single from Hill. Then in the sixth, the Lady Panthers scratched out three final runs to end the game via the run rule.

“Allison was throwing smoke, especially those first four innings,” Ridgeland head coach Richie Wood said. “She had some great stuff on her pitches. We’ve been talking about finishing games and tonight we finished strong.”

Ketner and Chyanne Revis each went 2-for-4 with a stole base, while freshman third baseman Haley Sandridge continued to swing a hot bat with three hits in four plate appearances and two runs scored.

Ketner, the shortstop, also saved the no-no in top of the fifth, climbing the ladder to snare a line drive that looked destined for extra bases. She fired to Haley Johnson to double up a runner at first, who had reached on a walk.

Heritage 4, Ridgeland 3

The Lady Panthers led 3-2 going into the bottom of the sixth inning on Thursday night, but the Generals pushed home solo runs in each of the last two innings to eke out a region win.

Hill and Johnson had two hits apiece as the Lady Panthers finished with seven hits. Revis had an RBI in the loss.

Wallin pitched 6 1/3 innings, giving up five hits with two strikeouts.

Ridgeland (5-4, 3-2) will host Gilmer on Tuesday before a game at Northwest Whitfield on Thursday. Start time is 5:55 p.m. for both games.
