Tennis: LaFayette holds court against Gordon Lee

The LaFayette Lady Ramblers added to their win total with a 4-1 victory over visiting Gordon Lee this past Monday.

In singles, Madison Denny defeated Jill Bradenburg, 6-0, 6-0, and Rachel Wallin beat Bethany Underwood, 6-3, 6-1.

Gordon Lee picked up its point at No. 3 singles where Katherine Grace McElhaney held off Ida Scoggins, 7-6, 6-3.

LaFayette finished up sweeping the doubles matches. Madison Harris and Asberri Freeman defeated Katelyn Bickett and Canaan Burnett, 6-2, 6-4, while Hannah Durham joined forces with S.J. Oxford to beat Hannah Lee and Lani Chastain, 6-3, 6-2.

In exhibition singles, Aubrey Steadman scored a 6-3win for LaFayette over MaKenzie Bailey. In exhibition doubles, Lady Ramblers Lauren Torbett and Emma Richardson scored a 6-0 win over Molly Vandiver and Chloe Dockery, while Micaela Hobbs and Macy Brewer beat Hannah Jones and Haven Teeters, 6-0.

The Rambler boys swept their way to a 5-0 win, though two of the matches had to be decided by third-set tiebreaker­s.

In singles, Jarrod Sitton beat Aaron McCurdy, 6-3, 6-4. Noah Matthews outlasted Tanner Davis, 6-4, 5-7, 10-5, and Brad Templeton took down Ryan McCurdy, 7-6, 6-1.

The No. 1 doubles match was filled with drama as Aaron Asbeury and Dillon Hughes finally put away Evan Clayton and Garrison Heiden, 6-3, 1-6, 11-9. The Ramblers completed the sweep as Andrew Long and Isaiah Southern beat Tobin Elliott and Tucker Trivette, 6-2, 6-4.

It marked the first matches of the season for the Trojans and Lady Trojans.

LaFayette sweeps Dade County

The Lady Ramblers kept rolling with a 5-0 shutout victory in Trenton this past Wednesday.

Playing Pro-8’s, LaFayette lost just two games in the five matches.

Denny beat Abby Moore, 8-1. Wallin blanked Haley Bayer, 8-0, and Scoggins took care of Karen Zheng, 8-1.

In doubles, Freeman and Harris shut out Alyssa Konrad and

Crystal Zheng, 8-0, while Durham and Oxford posted an 8-0 win over Madeline Estes and Mindy McDaniel.

In exhibition singles play, Brewer posted a 6-4 win, while Torbett won her match, 5-4.

In exhibition doubles, Steadman and Richardson won a pair of matches, both by 6-0 counts. Torbett and Hobbs also won 6-0, as did Hobbs and Brewer.

In the boys match, the Ramblers claimed a 4-1 win.

The lone point for the Wolverines was scored at No. 1 singles Cole Irwin outlasted Sitton, 9-7.

LaFayette won the other two singles matches. Matthews defeated Eric Counts, 8-5, while Templeton beat Davin Avery, 8-3.

In doubles play, Hughes and Jack Curole held off Jessie Chen and Hunter McBryar, 8-6, while Long and Southern got past Ben Smith and Bryan Goss, 9-7.

Curole and Parker Rodas-Webster picked up a 7-6 exhibition win in doubles for LaFayette.

LaFayette splits with Northwest

The LaFayette Lady Ramblers fell to 5-2 overall on the season with a 3-2 home loss to Northwest Whitfield on Thursday, while the Ramblers improved to 5-2 as they took down the Bruins, 4-1.

The Lady Bruins swept all three singles matches. Ella Spitler beat Denny, 7-6, 6-1. Southi Giresshmak­ar got past Wallin, 7-5, 7-5, and Isha Mittal defeated Scoggins, 6-2, 6-2.

LaFayette won both of the doubles matches. Harris and Freeman beat Olivia Elrod and Katelyn O’Ferrell, 6-1, 6-3, while Durham and Oxford had little trouble with Haley Cox and Caroline Kenemer, winning 6-2, 6-0.

In exhibition doubles, Torbett and Steadman beat Ashton Lowery and Hayley Hughes, 8-3.

On the boys’ side, Sitton cruised past Jordan King, 6-1, 6-0, at No. 1 singles, while Templeton beat Tyler Beouff, 6-3, 6-2, at No. 3 singles. Northwest’s point came from Andrew Bridges, who beat Matthews at No. 2 singles, 7-5, 6-3.

Asbeury and Hughes won a three-setter over Kyle McCutchion and Levi Gentry, 6-1, 6-3, and Long and Southern won in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1, over Trevor Ponders and Brady Stroud.

Gordon Lee falls at Trion

Both the Lady Trojans and Trojans tennis teams fell to 0-2 overall on the season as they were beaten last Wednesday afternoon in Trion.

Trion won the girls’ match by a count of 4-1.

In singles action, Chloe DeBerry beat Brandenbur­g, 7-6, 6-0. Lorin Walraven beat Underwood, 6-1, 6-3, but Gordon Lee would win at No. 3 singles as McElhaney defeated Brooke Tyson, 6-2, 6-4.

The Lady Bulldogs finished off the match by sweeping the doubles. Laurie Gentry and Shayla Youngblood beat Bickett and Burnett, 6-3, 6-1, while the team of Haley Price and Shelby Carlock beat Mary Pritchett and Lee, 6-0, 6-1.

The Trion boys handled Gordon Lee by a 5-0 score.

Jon York beat Aaron McCurdy, 6-2, 6-2. Chantry Bridges defeated Davis, 6-1 6-2, and Jacob Patty beat Ryan McCurdy in three sets, 6-2, 4-6, 10-8.

The No. 1 doubles team of Jarret Van Gurp and Josh Smith beat Clayton and Heiden, 6-1, 6-1, while Gavin Smith and Jackson Harris beat Elliott and Trivette by the same score.

Gordon Lee was scheduled to play at Chattooga on Monday, but due to newspaper deadlines, details were not available as of press time. The Trojans and Lady Trojans will host Dade County on Thursday.
