Covington adds to GNTC Cheer Cats’ Chattooga High cheerleading tradition

- By Scott Herpst

Georgia Northwestern Cheer Cats head coach Karen Stoker is looking to sign at least 10 new cheerleaders for the 2017-2018 season and she recently landed her first recruit as Chattooga’s Talea Covington signed on to join the Navy-and-Silver squad.

Stoker said that Covington’s addition to the squad will add to the Georgia Northwestern tradition of always having a former Chattooga cheerleader on the squad.

“I had the opportunity to scout Talea as both a football and a basketball cheerleader,” Cheer Cats head coach Karen Stoker said. “She is a perfect example of a perfect spirit cheerleader. She has lots of energy and a beautiful smile. Her motions are spot-on, her jumps are good and I was extremely impressed by her stunting.”

Covington began cheerleading as a seven- year-old and said she quickly fell in love with it.

“I think getting to cheer in college will be a great experience,” she said. “I’ll get to meet new people and learn new things about cheerleading.”

She said she plans to bring her sense of humor to the Bobcats squad.

“I have to keep everyone laughing because I hate to see people frowning,” she added. “I also want to take all the things I’ve learning through high school cheerleading and bring them to college.”

Stoker said that Covington has all the makings of a leader for the Cheer Cats.

“With only one cheer athlete returning from this (past) season, having a ready-made leader is important,” she said. “We expect great things from Talea and I believe she will be a great leader.”

Covington says she plans to major in Education and his considering becoming a chemistry teacher due to her love of science.
