Trojans three steps closer to earning 6-A title shot

- By Scott Herpst

The Gordon Lee Trojans are just four games away from playing for a region championship and perhaps homefield advantage through to the Class A Public School state finals.

Gordon Lee is now 8-0 in the subregion after winning three games this past week. The Navy-and-White have four subregion games remaining - two each against North Cobb Christian and Christian Heritage - and should they win all four, they would be assured of playing in the Region 6-A championship series, starting April 17.

The Trojans were, as of last Tuesday, first in the Class A Public School power rankings. Region champions are seeded at the top of the 24-team state playoff field in order of their power rankings.

In short, if the Trojans win the 6-A title and finish as the highest-ranked region champion in the GHSA power rankings, the entire road to the state finals would go through Chickamauga.

The state finals, in all classifications, are being moved to neutral sites - Rome and Savannah - starting this season. The exact location of the finals for each classification, which are scheduled to begin on May 25, have still not been posted by the GHSA.

The Trojans took a 3-0 lead early this past

Wednesday, only to give up the three tying runs in the top of the fourth.

But Chaney Rogers would come through with a two-out, RBIsingle in the fourth, while he and Dylan Minghini would hit back-to-back RBIsingles in the sixth to add extra insurance.

Minghini added a double in the win, while Mason Pettigrew was 2-for-2 and scored three times.

Ethan Clark threw seven innings, giving up six hits - three coming in the fourth inning - and allowing three earned runs with two walks and seven strikeouts.

Down 2-0 at home to the upset-minded Eagles on Thursday, the Trojans finally got things going late to pull away for the win.

A Kobie Cowan sacrifice fly in the third and a Justin Wooden RBI-double in the fifth tied the game before Gordon Lee scored three in the sixth. Two runs came home on a Noah Peterson double and Peterson would score on an RBI-single by Austin Thompson.

Pettigrew worked the first four innings for the Trojans. He gave up two earned runs on three hits and two walks with five strikeouts, but got no decision. Cole Tarvin entered the game to start the fifth and shut the Eagles down, not Wednesday, only to give up the three tying runs in the top of the fourth.
