LaFayette drops three to Gilmer in region play

- By Scott Herpst

The LaFayette Ramblers went into this week’s three-game series with Gilmer hoping to build on the momentum gathered from taking two of three from Southeast Whitfield last week.

However, things certainly did not go as planned for the Orangeand-Black.

After managing just one hit in Game 1 Wednesday in Ellijay, the Bobcats came to south walker County on Friday night and swept both ends of a doubleheader, dropping LaFayette to 7-11 overall and 2-4 in region play.

Jack Martin had a double, but it turned out to be the only hit for the Ramblers in the series opener.

Tied 1-1 going into the bottom of the sixth, Gilmer pushed three runs across the plate to secure the victory.

Ty Fisher pitched five strong innings, allowing just two hits and one earned run with no walks and three strikeouts, but got no decision. Logan Teasley pitched the sixth inning and was saddled with the loss after giving up three hits and three runs, two of which were earned.

Friday’s opener in LaFayette saw the Bobcats jump out to a 2-0 lead after the top of the first. They would add four more runs in the fourth and collect 10 total hits to just five for the Ramblers.

A.J. Buck had two of the hits for the home team, while Teasley, Martin and Ethan Stephenson each had one hit.

Stephenson took the loss, allowing eight hits and six runs - four of

which were earned - in five innings. He walked one and struck out three.

Gilmer 8, LaFayette 6

The Ramblers rallied with three runs in the bottom of the sixth to help force extra innings, but some defensive breakdowns in the top of the eighth allowed Gilmer to push home two runs as they went on to claim the extra-inning victory and the series sweep.

Teasley and Fisher each had two hits and two RBIs. Stephenson also recorded two hits, while Martin and Blake Guffey had one apiece.

Teasley pitched 5.1 innings, but got no decision. He allowed six runs - three earned - on seven hits and a walk with three strikeouts. Fisher threw the final 2.2 innings and gave up two runs, though neither were earned. He allowed just one hit, no walks and fanned five, but was forced to settle for a loss.

Gilmer (10-8, 5-4) made three errors in the game, but LaFayette made six and finished the series with 11 miscues.

The Ramblers will take off next week, but resume Region 6-AAAA play on April 4 (5:55 p.m.) when they play at Ridgeland in the first of a three-game series.
