LaFayette netters close out region slate

The LaFayette Lady Ramblers claimed three wins last week and sit at 8-3 with just one match remaining in the regular season.

On Monday, they travel to Jasper and got past the Dragonette­s, 3-2.

No. 1 singles player Madison Denny won 6-0, 6-2, while Asberri Freeman picked up a 6-1, 6-0 victory at No. 2 singles.

Pickens won at No. 3 singles and at No. 1 doubles, but the team of Ida Scoggins and S.J. Oxford clinched the win for LaFayette with a 6-3, 6-4 victory.

Aubrey Steadman won an exhibition singles match for LaFayette, 6-2, 6-0. Lauren Torbett and Emma Richardson won the first set, 6-3, and were leading 5-3 when their exhibition doubles match was called. In another exhibition match, Micaela Hobbs and Macy Brewer won their first set, 6-3, and were tied 3-3 in the second when the match was called.

LaFayette returned home to face Southeast Whitfield on Wednesday and dropped just six total games in a 5-0 win over the Lady Raiders.

Denny won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1 singles. Freeman picked up a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 2 singles and Rachel Wallin won 6-1, 6-1 in the final singles match.

In doubles, the No. 1 team of Hannah Durham and Madison Harris breezed to a 6-0, 6-0 victory, while Oxford and Scoggins posted a 6-1, 6-2 win.

Torbett and Richardson teamed up for a 6-0, 6-0 shutout in an exhibition doubles match.

The Lady Ramblers capped their region slate with a 4-1 home win over Gilmer Thursday evening in south Walker County.

Denny picked up a 6-2, 6-0 win at No. 1 singles, while Freeman won 7-6, 6-3 at No. 2 singles. Durham and Harris collected a 6-3, 6-1 victory, while Oxford and Scoggins won in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1.

Gilmer’s lone point came at No. 3 singles.

On the boys’ side, LaFayette went 2-1 on the week, winning their first matches before falling in the finale.

The Ramblers swept the singles matches and scored a 3-2 win at Pickens. Jarrod Sitton won 6-4, 6-0 and Noah Matthews needed three sets to claim a 6-2, 5-7, 6-0 victory. Templeton won by a 6-1, 6-3 count.

Isaiah Southern won 6-3 in exhibition singles and Pickens won both doubles matches.

Against Southeast, Sitton picked up a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 1 singles, while Templeton posted a 6-4, 6-2 win at No. 2 singles. In the No. 3 spot, Aaron Asbeury won 6-4, 6-0.

Southeast’s lone point came at No. 1 doubles, but Southern and Andrew Long bounced back for a 6-1, 6-1 victory.

The Gilmer boys

Brandenbur­g, McElhaney and Underwood won in singles. Bickett and Burnett won at No. 1 doubles, while the team of Lee and Pritchett completed the sweep.

The modest streaks came to end at Trion on Thursday. The Lady Trojans lost a 5-0 decision, while Gordon Lee’s boys fell, 4-1.

Ryan McCurdy was the only Gordon Lee player to post a victory. He won at No. 2 singles, 6-4, 7-6.
