In the preseason, Gordon Lee head coach Mike Dunfee said he wasn’t exactly sure just what his team’s identity was, adding that it would have to develop over time.

Two months into the season and just about two weeks away from playing for the Region 6-A championship, Dunfee says that identity has finally been determined.

“I think it’s our pitching,” he said. “We’ve got some arms and a great bullpen to go with a solid defense. We just have to score enough runs to let (our pitchers) go do their thing.”

And last Tuesday, that’s exactly what they did.

Two runs in the bottom of the first inning and one insurance run in the sixth turned out to be plenty of support for junior hurler Austin Thompson as the Trojans picked up a 3-0 win over North Cobb Christian at Claude Hendrix Field.

Three hits in the first inning, including RBI-singles by Chaney Rogers and Noah Peterson, were all the Navy-and-White would need. The third and final run came in on a Justin Wooden sacrifice fly.

Thompson, who has neatly settled into his role as the team’s No. 2 starter behind senior ace Ethan Clark, threw just 87 pitches against the Eagles. He gave up just two hits, walked three and fanned two in the complete-game victory.

“I saw it last year in JV games,” Dunfee said. “Austin loves the game. He’s passionate about it and he wants the ball. You got to love a kid that wants it, isn’t afraid to take it and doesn’t give it back until the game is over.
