For the third time in the past five school calendar years, Gordon Lee High School finished in the top three of Class A in the Regions Bank Directors Cup Standings.

The Georgia Athletic Directors Association (GADA) has presented the award annually since the 1999-2000 school year to recognize the athletic departments in all classifications of the GHSA who have excelled and shown superior performance.

Twenty-five different GHSA sports are counted in the standings each year with each school’s eight highestscoring sports for each gender being counted for the Cup standings.

Winning schools receive trophies and banners and since the 2002-2003 school year, awards have been presented to the top male program, the top female program and the top overall program in all classifications.

Gordon Lee finished third in this year’s Class A standings behind Wesleyan and Holy Innocents’, who are both private schools in the metro-Atlanta area.

Gordon Lee amassed 975 overall points, 462 from its boys’ programs and 513 from its girls’ programs.

The Trojans scored big with a state golf title, state runner-up finishes in track and baseball and a thirdplace showing in cross country. Gordon Lee also scored high in wrestling and earned points for qualifying for the state playoffs in tennis, giving it second place in the boys’ standings.

As for the Lady Trojans, state championships in softball and competition cheerleading brought in 100 points each, while a tie for first in golf gave them another 95 points. Gordon Lee’s girls were third in cross country, fourth in track and made the second round of the playoffs in volleyball, which put them third in the girls’ standings.

Wesleyan won the overall title with 1,186 points and the girls’ title with 743 points, while Holy Innocents’ won the boys’ title with 506 points and was second in the overall standings with 1,084 points.

It is worth noting that Wesleyan picked up 468 total points from soccer, swimming and lacrosse, while Holy Innocents’ scored 303 total points in those three sports. Soccer, swimming and lacrosse - all GHSA-sanctioned sports - are not offered at Gordon Lee.

Telfair County (817 points) edged out Darlington (816.5) as they rounded out the

top five in the overall standings.

Gordon Lee won the girls’ title and the overall title for Class A back in the 2012-13 school year with 1,188 points, while their 1,084 points the following year was second only to Holy Innocents’. Gordon Lee spent the previous two years in Class AA. They were 14th overall in 2013-14 and 18th overall in 2014-15.

As for Class AAAA, LaFayette was 33rd in the overall standings with 349 points, while Ridgeland was 43rd with 284 points. Heritage (13th overall) was the highest-finishing school from Region 6 with 685 points, followed by Northwest Whitfield (17th overall) with 530 points.
