Robert Au­gus­tus Wiegand of Rock Spring, Ga., and for­merly of Lopat­cong, N.J., passed away Thurs­day, June 8, 2017, af­ter a brief ill­ness.

Robert was born Nov. 11, 1950, in Chicago Heights, Ill., to Robert Au­gus­tus Wiegand Sr. and Do­minica (Fer­rara) Wiegand. Bob, as he was known to those close to him, grew up in Chatham Town­ship, N.J. He served in the United States Army, where he served with the 82nd Air­borne Divi­sion dur­ing the Viet­nam War, and then later, with the Na­tional Guard in Phillips­burg, N.J. He mar­ried Gale Noel Mer­rill May, 14, 1982, in West­field, N.J. Bob and Gale raised their fam­ily in Lopat­cong, N.J. be­fore re­lo­cat­ing to Ge­or­gia in 2005.

A grad­u­ate of Fair­leigh Dickinson Univer­sity, Bob re­ceived his B.S. in Chem­istry in 1994.

Bob was an avid hob­by­ist, with in­ter­ests in­clud­ing his­tor­i­cal reen­act­ments and pro­duc­ing his­tor­i­cally ac­cu­rate ac­cou­trements, fly ty­ing and fly fish­ing, wood­carv­ing and wood­work­ing, model air­planes, and cy­cling. Bob was a skilled mu­si­cian, not only play­ing the gui­tar and man­dolin but build­ing them as well.

Bob is sur­vived by his wife of 35 years, Gale Mer­rill Wiegand and two chil­dren, Christo­pher Robert Wiegand, 33, of Port­land, Ore. and Kathryn Mer­rill Wiegand, 30, of Ga.; brother, Richard Wiegand of Brighton, Mich.; sis­ters, Janet Atkin­son of West Palm Beach, Fla. and Lau­rie Wiegand-Jackson of Mount Lau­rel, N.J.

Memo­rial dona­tions in mem­ory of Bob can be made to the Amer­i­can Heart As­so­ci­a­tion.

Grave­side ser­vices: will be held at the Chat­tanooga Na­tional Ceme­tery 10:30 a.m. Fri­day, June 16.
