Robert Augustus Wiegand, Rock Spring
Robert Augustus Wiegand of Rock Spring, Ga., and formerly of Lopatcong, N.J., passed away Thursday, June 8, 2017, after a brief illness.
Robert was born Nov. 11, 1950, in Chicago Heights, Ill., to Robert Augustus Wiegand Sr. and Dominica (Ferrara) Wiegand. Bob, as he was known to those close to him, grew up in Chatham Township, N.J. He served in the United States Army, where he served with the 82nd Airborne Division during the Vietnam War, and then later, with the National Guard in Phillipsburg, N.J. He married Gale Noel Merrill May, 14, 1982, in Westfield, N.J. Bob and Gale raised their family in Lopatcong, N.J. before relocating to Georgia in 2005.
A graduate of Fairleigh Dickinson University, Bob received his B.S. in Chemistry in 1994.
Bob was an avid hobbyist, with interests including historical reenactments and producing historically accurate accoutrements, fly tying and fly fishing, woodcarving and woodworking, model airplanes, and cycling. Bob was a skilled musician, not only playing the guitar and mandolin but building them as well.
Bob is survived by his wife of 35 years, Gale Merrill Wiegand and two children, Christopher Robert Wiegand, 33, of Portland, Ore. and Kathryn Merrill Wiegand, 30, of Ga.; brother, Richard Wiegand of Brighton, Mich.; sisters, Janet Atkinson of West Palm Beach, Fla. and Laurie Wiegand-Jackson of Mount Laurel, N.J.
Memorial donations in memory of Bob can be made to the American Heart Association.
Graveside services: will be held at the Chattanooga National Cemetery 10:30 a.m. Friday, June 16.
