Com­mis­sioner’s meet­ing is this Thurs­day evening

Walker County Com­mis­sioner Shan­non Whit­field will hold his next pub­lic meet­ing on Thurs­day, July 27, in the com­mis­sioner’s con­fer­ence room at 101 S. Duke St. (at the in­ter­sec­tion with Vil­lanow Street) in LaFayette. The meet­ing will be­gin at 6:30 p.m.

Qual­i­fy­ing pe­riod is Aug. 2123 for LaFayette elec­tions

The city of LaFayette will elect two coun­cil mem­bers, a mayor and mu­nic­i­pal court judge this year. Can­di­dates may file qual­if­ing pa­pers be­tween 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. each day dur­ing Aug. 21-23..

Seats up for elec­tion in­clude those held by Mayor Andy Arnold, Coun­cil­man Ben Brad­ford, Coun­cil­man Beacher Gar­many and City Judge Ken­neth S. Maples.

New name for rec build­ing

Coun­cil­man Wayne Swan­son, dur­ing the coun­cil’s July 17 meet­ing, made a mo­tion to change the name of the LaFayette Re­cre­ation Cen­ter build­ing to honor the late Harry and Sue Har­ring­ton, who helped bring the re­cre­ation cen­ter to the city. A ded­i­ca­tion cer­e­mony date will be an­nounced.

Three area State Farm agen­cies re­cently do­nated about $1,000 worth of flash­lights to LaFayette Fire & Safety, some­thing that saves tax­payer money. LaFayette Fire & Safety Direc­tor Stacey Meeks said the depart­ment was in des­per­ate need of flash­lights...
