RECREATION · Cloudland Canyon State Park offers instruction in compass reading and knot tying skills from 2-3 p.m. on Saturdays. The orienteering programs on Aug. 19 and Sept. 2 introduces map and compass reading — never get lost in the woods again. MEETING ·The Northwest Georgia Regional Commission’s Area Agency on Aging will hold its quarterly public meeting on Tuesday, Aug. 22, at the Thornton Recreation Center, 102 North Floyd Park Road in Rome (across from Armuchee High School on U.S. Highway 27 North) beginning at 10 a.m.

Friday, Aug. 25

Friday niight hikes at Cloudland Canyon State Park are 2-mile walks on one of the park’s best trails. Participants will learn interesting facts about the geology and history of the canyon. By the end of the hike, hikers will be in the dark, enjoying the trail by moonlight and listening for night sounds. Ages 10 and older. Reservations Required. Snacks and water will be available for you take with you on the hike and headlamps will be provided. Please bring a small pack to carry your items.
