Walker County Messenger

Friday night lights are back (and not a moment too soon)

-

I don’t have to look at the calendar to know that it’s football season. I can feel it.

It was two Saturdays ago (Aug. 5 at the time of this writing) and I walked out my front door about 7:30 in the morning to go cover an event when it hit me.

There was no oppressive heat. No humidity. Just warm sunshine and the slightest hint of a cool, slightly crisp breeze.

Fall may not officially start until Sept. 22, but for us football junkies, it’s technically already here.

Two days from now (or three days from now if you couldn’t wait until Wednesday and ran out to buy a copy of the Pigskin Preview on Tuesday night), six high school teams in Catoosa and Walker Counties will hit the gridiron and officially kick off the 2017 season.

It will be a new beginning for everyone, especially me.

I’m sure you have heard by now, but just in case, yours truly is back to being the Sports Editor for both papers once again and unless something unforeseen changes, this move is permanent.

Which means I’ll be keeping tabs on and writing stories about six high school football teams this fall instead of just three (and eight middle school teams too, but who’s counting?)

The point is, I’m going to be a bit busy this fall with football (and softball and volleyball and cross country and cheerleading and some soccer and even some college golf), so everyone just bear with me.

I say this every year, but I sincerely hope all of you reading this column enjoy every page of this edition. Yes, I do get paid to put the Pigskin Preview
