Resurgent Lady Panthers upset rival LaFayette
It was quite a week for the Ridgeland Lady Panthers, who got a road split at Heritage, knocking off stateranked LaFayette in the process, before winning all three of their matches in Summerville on Thursday.
Ridgeland gave Heritage a run in their first match in Boynton on Tuesday, losing 25-22 and 25-15. Jayda Jenkins had seven kills and three aces for the Lady Panthers, while Sarah Williams added two aces.
However, their second match saw them upset seventh-ranked LaFayette with a thrilling 29-27 decision in the opening set before a surprisingly easy 25-9 victory in the final set.
Jenkins had seven kills, nine digs, an ace and a block against LaFayette. Williams picked up nine aces and four kills, while Tara Taylor had three aces. Rachel Atchley finished with 16 assists, eight digs and a kill. Landree Dunn had three kills and a block. Tori Elliott added three kills and Abbi Witherow picked up 10 digs and an ace.
They concluded the week on Thursday at Chattooga High School by winning three times to improve to 18-13 overall (2-1 in Area 6-AAAA).
They picked up a 25-18, 25-22 win over Dalton behind five kills and nine digs by Jenkins and five kills from Williams. Atchley had 10 assists and six digs. Witherow and Taylor had five digs and Tenley Moore picked up four digs. Sydney Davis had four digs and two kills, while Elliott recorded two kills.
Ridgeland handled Gaylesville (Ala.) by a count of 25-12 and 25-15. Atchley had 16 assists and three aces. Jenkins racked up 10 kills, five digs and three aces. Williams added six aces, four kills and four digs and Witherow had nine digs and four aces.
The Black-and-White also held off the home team, who are currently ranked No. 5 in Class AA, 25-13, 24-26 and 1513. Atchley had 16 more assists and seven digs. Jenkins had six kills and eight digs. Elliott recorded five kills. Landree Dunn added three kills and Williams picked up seven digs, three kills and two aces. Witherow had 16 digs, Moore added 14 and Taylor finished with 11.
Ridgeland began the week having won six of its last seven matches.
