State Volleyball Roundup: LaFayette, LFO, Gor­don Lee elim­i­nated in first round

The LaFayette Lady Ram­blers, who set a new pro­gram sin­gle­sea­son record with 40 vic­to­ries this sea­son, un­for­tu­nately suf­fered their 13th and fi­nal loss of 2017 this past Thurs­day with a fourset loss at No. 5-ranked North Oconee.

The Lady Ti­tans won the opener, 25-14, only to see LaFayette re­spond with a 27-25 vic­tory to tie things up at a set apiece. How­ever, North Oconee would con­trol the fi­nal two sets, 2517 and 25-12, to score the win and ad­vance to the se­cond round of the Class AAAA state tour­na­ment.

Se­nior Katie Dixon had 14 digs and eight kills, while Emily Red­den had 29 as­sists in five digs in her fi­nal high school match.

Jil­lian Morgan col­lected 14 kills, eight blocks and seven digs for the Lady Ram­blers (40-13). Gra­cie Stier picked up 19 digs, six kills and two aces, while Bai­ley Tarvin had 24 digs and two aces. Other con­trib­u­tors for the Lady Ram­blers in­cluded Sarah Ray (6 kills, 3 digs), Elaina Kirk­endoll (2 digs, 3 blocks) and Michaela Hobbs (12 digs, 2 aces, 2 as­sists).

Along with Her­itage’s vic­tory over Jef­fer­son, North­west Whitfield picked up a 3-0 win over Madi­son County, but South­east Whitfield was beaten, 3-0, by St. Pius X, giv­ing Area 6 a 2-2 mark in the open­ing round.

LFO falls to East Jack­son

The sea­son came to a close for the Lady War­riors last

Wed­nes­day as they dropped a 25-9, 25-19, 25-10 de­ci­sion at East Jack­son in the open­ing round of the Class AAA state tour­na­ment.

Macey Gregg had 20 serve re­ceives to go with nine kills, three digs, two blocks and an as­sist. Miyah Fos­ter picked up five kills, five as­sists, two aces and 15 serve re­ceives. Madi Gra­ham was on the re­ceiv­ing end of a dozen serves and added seven as­sists.

con­trib­u­tors in­cluded Symerel Ben­nett (3 kills, 3 blocks), Jer­ri­ale Jack­son (4 serve re­ceives, 4 blocks, 2 kills, 2 as­sists) and Alesya McBur­nett (14 serve re­ceives, 5 as­sists, 3 digs, 1 ace, 1 kill).

The Lady War­riors fin­ished the year with a 12-31 over­all record.

Gor­don Lee elim­i­nated in Fair­burn

The Lady Tro­jans won their open­ing set, 25-16, on the road in the first round of the Class A state tour­na­ment. How­ever, host Land­mark Chris­tian

would right their ship at Gor­don Lee’s ex­pense, sweep­ing the fi­nal three sets, 25-14, 25-14 and 25-21.

Aubree Yancey and Sum­mer Fitz­patrick both had eight kills in their fi­nal match for the Navy-and-White. Gra­cie O’Neal added six kills to go with eight digs and three aces.

The Lady Tro­jans fin­ished the year with a 33-12 record. It was Gor­don Lee’s fourth straight sea­son with 30 or more wins, while the 33 vic­to­ries was a sin­gle-sea­son record for the pro­gram.
