Mercer’s Conard Broom earns baseball All-American honors

Former Gordon Lee baseball standout and current Mercer University player Conard Broom has been named as a third team AllAmerica­n by Baseball America.

The 6-foot-1, 180-pound junior went 10-4 for the Bears in 2018, finishing the season with a 1.70 ERA in 74 innings over 31 appearance­s. He became the 10th player in Mercer history to record 100 or more strikeouts in a single season, finishing the year with 111, and was ranked third nationally in strikeouts per nine innings (13.5).

He was first team All-Southern Conference for the second straight year and had arguably his best performanc­e of the year with a sixinning, 12-strikeout outing in a 6-4 win against then-No. 1 ranked Florida.

GNTC open gym workouts

Georgia Northweste­rn will be holding open gym workouts for current students and prospectiv­e freshmen through July.

Students must be enrolled in 12 credit hours, be in good standing with the school and have a current, updated physical in order to participat­e.

Women’s volleyball open gym workouts will be held June 12, 14, 19, 21, 26 and 28, and July 10, 12, 17, 19, 24, 26 and 31 from 3-4:30 p.m. For more informatio­n on GNTC volleyball, contact head coach Amber Weaver at aweaver@gntc.edu.

Open gym workouts for basketball programs will be held on June 14, 21 and 28 and July 12, 19 and 26 from 5:30-7 p.m.

Ringgold speed and track camp

Ringgold High School track coach Houston White will be hosting a speed and track camp on Saturday, June 9 from 9 a.m.-12 noon for rising third through eighth graders, both boys and girls. Check-in is at 8:30 a.m. and the cost is $25 per camper.

Gordon Lee youth softball camp

The Gordon Lee Lady Trojans will hold their annual softball camp on June 11-13 from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. for players, ages 6-12.

The camp will be held at the Crystal Springs Field and costs $100 per camper.

Instructio­n will be given in hitting, fielding and baserunnin­g, while additional instructio­n will also be given to pitchers and catchers.

Lunch will be provided or campers can bring their own sack lunches.

Gordon Lee youth basketball camp

The Gordon Lee Trojans kids’ basketball camp will be held June 2528 from 8 a.m.-12 noon each day at the Gordon Lee High School gym.

The camp is for both boys and girls, from rising first graders to rising sixth graders, at a cost of $100 per camper.

Ringgold basketball skills academy

The Ringgold basketball skills academy will meet at Ringgold Middle School on Wednesday nights starting June 27. The academy will be taught by Coach Greg Elkins and Coach Brian Mountjoy.

The academy will focus on ballhandli­ng and fundamenta­ls. It will be available for upcoming first, second and third grade girls and boys from 5-6 p.m. and for upcoming fourth, fifth and sixth grade girls and boys from 6-7 p.m. The cost is $10 per player for each hour-long session.

The Ringgold Middle School softball team will be sponsoring a youth tournament on June 22-23. The tournament will be open to 7 and 8 year-old rec league and rec all-star teams. The cost is $75 per team and each team will be guaranteed three games. Trophies will be given to the top two teams.

LFO youth cheer camp

LFO will host a youth cheer camp on July 9-11 from 9 a.m.-12 noon each day at the LFO High School gym.

The camp is open for ages 4-12, along with Lakeview Middle School cheerleade­rs at a cost of $50 per camper.

Snacks and drinks will be provided or campers can bring their own from home.

The “Little Warriors Showcase” performanc­e will be held at 11:30 a.m. on the last day of the camp.

Pre-registrati­on will take place at the LFO Cheer Room at the high school on June 20 from 8:30-11:30 a.m.

Battle at Battlefiel­d golf tournament

Supporters of LFO and Ringgold High Schools are encouraged to participat­e and support the 11th annual tournament, which will be held at Windstone Golf Club on Tuesday, July 10. Registrati­on and lunch will begin at 12 noon before a 1 p.m. shotgun start.

Entry fee is $100 per player for the four-person select shot event. Entry fee includes food, drink, door prizes and range balls.

LaFayette youth volleyball camp

LaFayette High School will hold a youth volleyball camp on Sunday, July 15 and on Sunday, July 22 at the high school gym from 1:30- 3:30 p.m. each day. The camp is for players in first through eighth grade at a cost of $35 per camper.

Instructio­n will come from LaFayette High School coaches and players.

All campers will be grouped according to age and ability and all campers will receive a T-shirt and a ticket to a future LaFayette High School match.
