Heritage hoping for better luck at start of 6-AAAA play

- By Scott Herpst

A frustrating beginning of the season continued for the Heritage Generals last week as they dropped four more games to fall to 0-7. The Navy-and-Red were looking to right the ship this week as they were slated to open Region 6-AAAA play with a three-game series against Ridgeland, starting on Tuesday.

Dalton 11, Heritage 1

The Generals gave up six runs in the top of the first inning and three more in the top of the third as they suffered a five-inning home loss to the Catamounts on Wednesday. Pete Padgett picked up the lone RBI for Heritage on a bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the first inning. Cade Kiniry and C.J. Robertson both had singles to account for the only two hits of the night for the home team.

Padgett started on the mound and ultimately took the loss. He pitched 2.2 innings, giving up three hits and two walks, but just three earned runs. Zach Barrett and Landon Skeen both pitched in relief for the Generals.

Dalton 6, Heritage 5

Down 6-1 going into the top of the seventh inning, the Generals pushed four runs across the plate, but came up one run short in a loss at Dalton on Thursday. Alex Mixon each had two hits and one RBI, while Skeen and J.T. Eaton also drove in one run apiece.

Kiniry was saddled with the loss. He threw four innings, allowing eight hits, but just two earned runs. He struck out five batters and did not issue a walk. J.J. Hunt pitched two innings of relief. He allowed four hits and one walk with two strikeouts and did not give up an earned run.

Ringgold 7, Heritage 0

Traveling to Ringgold for a make-up game on Friday, the Generals managed just one hit on a cold night in a loss to their county rivals.

Kiniry had a single for the Generals. Nick Hanson pitched 4.2 innings. He gave up six runs - four earned - on three hits and three walks with two strikeouts. Caden Snyder pitched 1.1 innings, allowing an unearned run on two hits.

Gordon Lee 11, Heritage 6

Playing at LFO in the 2020 Catoosa County Children’s Fund Baseball Classic on Saturday afternoon, the Generals took an early lead on a two-run homer by Mixon, only to see the Trojans put up 11 unanswered runs.

Heritage would score its final four runs in the top of the sixth inning. Mixon once again provided the big blow with a two-run double, while Snyder and Noah Johnson were both credited with RBIs in the inning.

Mixon finished 2 for 3 with four RBIs for the Generals.

Skeen got the start on the hill. He went three innings, giving up two unearned runs on a hit and two walks with three strikeouts. Barrett, along with Mixon and Snyder, all pitched in relief. Barrett suffered the loss, while Snyder had three strikeouts in two innings of work.
