Area tennis teams ready for region tournaments
The Heritage girls’ tennis team closed out its regular season last Tuesday with a 5-0 region victory over Northwest Whitfield in Tunnel Hill.
Morgan Phillips (6-2, 6-0), Bailey Christol (6-1, 6-0) and Mia Callahan (6-4, 6-3) swept the singles matches for the Lady Generals. The team of Kortney McKenzie and Rheagan Simmons (64, 6-2) picked up a win at No. 1 doubles, while the team of Elli Jost and Lauren Mock (6-0, 6-0) breezed to victory at No. 2 doubles.
The Lady Generals finished the regular season 7-2 overall and 5-1 in region play.
The Generals would get one singles win and one doubles win, but it was not enough to get past the Bruins in a hard-fought match.
Nathan Minton scored a 7-5, 6-2 victory in singles, while the team of Jedd Johnson and Kaleb Biddle won their match, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4. It was one of three matches that went three sets.
The Generals finished the regular season 5-4 overall and 3-3 in Region 7-AAAA play.
The 7-AAAA tournament will be held this week at Lakeshore Park in Dalton.
LaFayette girls win twice
The Lady Ramblers picked up a 4-1 victory at Ringgold last Tuesday.
Abby Keys (6-2, 6-3) and Macy Mashburn (6-0, 6-1) won in singles. In doubles, LaTyah Barber and Kloe Ludy earned a 6-1, 6-3 win, while the team of Megan Torbett and Caylee Purcell needed three sets to pick up 6-1, 6-7 (6), 6-4 victory.
The Lady Ramblers also had two exhibition doubles wins. Macy Martin and Abigail Clark on 8-5, while Sydney Kruger and Makayla Priddy picked up an 8-3 win.
Harper Haupt had the lone victory for the Lady Tigers with a 7-5, 6-1 win at No. 2 singles.
The Ringgold boys would claim a 4-1 decision over the Ramblers behind singles’ victories from Camden Tunnell (6-0, 6-0) and Ty Williams (6-3, 6-0).
The team of Isaac Self and Elijah Wofford scored a 6-4, 6-4 victory, while Luke Bender and Ben Edwards won their match, 6-2, 6-2.
Tucker Henderson had the lone victory for the Ramblers with a 6-0, 6-1 victory in singles.
LaFayette also won an exhibition doubles match as Braxton Beavers and Dylan Brown picked up an 8-1 victory.
The Lady Ramblers capped their region slate with a 7-1 mark following a 5-0 shutout of Coahulla Creek this past Wednesday in south Walker County.
Keys (6-0, 6-0), Grace Hamilton (6-1, 6-1) and Rylee Stansberry (6-3, 6-1) all picked up singles’ victories for the Orange-andBlack. Barber and Ludy completed an unbeaten run in region play with a 6-1, 6-0 victory at No. 1 doubles, while Torbett and Purcell won their match 6-0, 6-0 to complete the sweep.
In the boys’ match, the Ramblers dropped a 4-1 decision to the Colts. The lone point was scored by the No. 1 doubles team of Ben Maanum and Anthony Collins, who swept their match, 6-4, 6-4.
The 6-AAA tournament is also scheduled for this week at Lakeshore Park in Dalton.
