LaFayette hits five homers, wins twice in Dalton

- By Scott Herpst sherpst@npco.com

Unplayable field conditions prompted LaFayette to have two baseball games moved to Edwards Park in Dalton last week, and that was perfectly fine with Case Davis.

After hitting a pair of homeruns there on Thursday night, the future Berry College Viking blasted his third home run of the 2022 campaign on Friday as the Ramblers scored back-to-back wins over Southeast and Trion to end the week with a 2-5 record.

LAFAYETTE 23, SOUTHEAST 6

The Ramblers raced out to a 13-0 lead after the top of the second inning on Thursday, finished with 18 hits, did not commit an error, and took advantage of six miscues by the Raider defense in a fourinning shellacking.

The Orange-and-Black also played a little long ball.

Davis belted a two-run homer in the top of the first inning and the Ramblers added three more homers in the top of the second.

Jathan Harding led off the inning with a solo shot. Davis launched his second homer of the game two batters later, and James Wathen delivered another two-run round-tripper two batters after that. LaFayette also ripped six doubles on the night, two by Skylar Cepeda.

Cepeda, Wathen and Ross Martin each had three hits, while Davis, Harding and

Nick Adams each finished with two hits. Davis and Wathen each drove in four runs. Martin, Adams and Cody Davis knocked in two runs apiece, while Harding and Cepeda each had one RBI.

Wathen pitched 3.2 innings, allowing six earned runs on six walks and five strikeouts, before Jayden Dixon got the final out to close out the night.

LAFAYETTE 5, TRION 3

Davis’ third homer of the year came in the bottom of the first inning on Friday and followed a Zain Smith double after Kadin Smith got on base with a Bulldog error to begin the inning.

The Bulldogs, who scored one run in the top of the first, used a pair of LaFayette errors to plate the tying runs in the top of the third. However, Kadin Smith delivered a single in the home half of the inning, moved to second on an error and came around on an RBI-single by Harding.

The Ramblers turned a double play to thwart a Trion scoring chance in the top of the third and that would be all the runs until the bottom of the fifth. Zain Smith led off with his second double of the game, took third on a passed ball, and scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Adams.

Adams pitched five innings, allowing just one earned run. He surrendered four hits and two walks, finishing with six strikeouts in the victory. Nick Radtke gave up just one hit and fanned four batters in a two-inning save.

Kadin Smith matched Zain Smith with two hits and two runs scored for the Ramblers, while Wathen and Cepeda also had singles.
