OCA teams gain momentum as December wraps

The Oakwood Christian Lady Eagles earned their seventh, eighth and ninth wins of the season after going 3-1 last week. Not to be outdone, the Oakwood boys’ also added two wins to their ledger.

OAKWOOD GIRLS 30, BEREAN ACADEMY 25

Mana Gilchrist had a big night for OCA at home last Monday. The junior had 15 points, seven steals, seven blocks and six rebounds. Cheyenne Simpson scored six points, while Trinity Hall made 10 steals to go with her two points.

Chloe Brodie finished with four points, five boards, three steals, two assists and a block. Caroline Tindell capped the scoring with three points, while Janel Buckels helped out on the defensive end with five rebounds, three steals and a pair of blocked shots.

OAKWOOD GIRLS 44, RHEA COUNTY ACADEMY 5

Last Tuesday in Dayton, Tenn., the Lady Eagles steamrolle­d their way to a 27-0 halftime lead en route to the victory.

Brodie had 10 points, five steals and four rebounds for OCA. Reagan Pickard finished with nine points and two rebounds. Gilchrist had eight points and a pair of boards, while Noelle Sullivan scored five points.

Samantha Harris had four points and three steals. Simpson also had four points to go with five steals, three assists and two rebounds. Tindell had two points and three rebounds. Hall also chipped in with a pair of points, while Buckels picked up four rebounds, four blocks and two steals.

RIDGELAND GIRLS 44, OAKWOOD 33

Back at home on Friday, the Lady Eagles were down 14 at intermissi­on and trailed by 19 in the fourth, but showed some heart and grit to get it back down to 11 before the final horn.

Gilchrist had 10 points for Oakwood. Brodie scored nine points and Hall had six. Buckels finished with four and Pickard added three.

OAKWOOD GIRLS 29, DALTON ACADEMY 11

The Lady Eagles rebounded from the loss with a smothering defensive performanc­e at home on Saturday.

Hall had 10 points, three rebounds and two steals for the Lady Eagles, now 9-3 on the year. Gilchrist had eight points, four rebounds and three steals, while Simpson put up three points to go with four steals and three rebounds.

Buckels, Tindell, Brodie and Harris all scored two points apiece. Brodie had five boards, Buckels had three, and Pickard added four rebounds.

BEREAN BOYS 48, OAKWOOD 39

The Eagles lost a close one in the nightcap at Berean, despite 12 points by Tomo Gilchrist and 10 from Hunter Hickman. Ryan Phillips and Cason Baggett each scored five, while John McDonough and Garrett Dempsey had three each for OCA.

OAKWOOD BOYS 51, RHEA COUNTY ACADEMY 32

The Eagles finished off the sweep in Tuesday’s nightcap. Hickman had 13 points and Dempsey had 10 in a balanced scoring night for OCA. Gilchrist added eight points and McDonough finished with seven.

The remainder of the scoring featured five from Joseph Dawson, four from Phillips and two each by Graham Meyer and Isaiah Staven.

RIDGELAND BOYS 69, OAKWOOD 33

Friday night saw the home team fall behind 26-4 in the first quarter and never cover in a loss to their county neighbors.

Oakwood got four threes and 16 points from Dempsey. Gilchrist ended the night with 11 points, followed by four from Dawson and two by McDonough.

OAKWOOD BOYS 56, DALTON ACADEMY 50

Dempsey had a big afternoon on Saturday with 20 points and Hickman added 12 as the Eagles swept the season series from the Pumas. Gilchrist scored eight, McDonough and Phillips each had six, while Dawson chipped in with four for Oakwood (3-10).

Both OCA teams are slated to play at Dade County on Dec. 30.
