Early voting kicks off April 29 for general primary

Early voting for the May 21 general primary election opens April 29, essentiall­y offering three weeks of advance voting. In Walker County, there are eight contested local races (involving a total of 18 candidates): sheriff; coroner; Superior Court judge; county Board of Commission­ers District 3, District 4 and chair; House District 1; and Senate District 53.

Walker has several voting sites for casting your ballot early.

Early voters can cast their ballots at the Walker County Courthouse at 103 S Duke St., in LaFayette between Monday, April 29, and Friday, May 17, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., and on Saturday, May 4, and Saturday, May 11, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

They can also cast their ballots at four satellite locations: Rock Spring voting precinct at 265 Bicentenni­al

Trail in Rock Spring; Rossville voting precinct at 400 Mcfarland Ave., in Rossville; Chickamaug­a voting precinct at 1817 Lee Clarkson Road in Chickamaug­a; and Fairyland voting precincts at 1214 Lula Lake Road in Lookout Mountain, Ga. These voting precincts will be open Saturday, May 11, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. They will also open Monday, May 13, through Friday, May 17, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Monday, April 22, is the last day to register to vote in the primary. You can apply for an absentee ballot through Friday, May 10.

On election day (May 21) you must vote at your assigned precinct. Walker has 11 voting precincts, all of which will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on election day. Don’t know which one is your precinct? Go to “My Voter Page” (mvp.sos.ga.gov/s) and log in with your name, birthday and county. On “My Voter Page” you can also check your voter registrati­on status, mail-in applicatio­n and ballot status, poll location, early voting locations, elected officials, registrati­on informatio­n on file with the county office, sample ballot for the upcoming election, and provisiona­l ballot status.
