Area golfers ready for area tourneys

The Area 3-AAA golf tournament was scheduled for Monday of this week at the LaFayette Golf Course and in preparatio­n for the tournament, Gordon Lee and LaFayette faced off in a pair of 18-hole matches this past Thursday.

On the girls’ side, the Lady Trojans earned the victory as an 84 from Haley Talley, an 87 by Charlsie McElhaney and an 89 from Campbelle Williams gave the Navy-and-White a final score of 260. Zoie Kay shot a 121 and Hannah Kresser carded a 122, but only the three lowest scores make up the team total in girls’ matches.

LaFayette was led by Maggie Green with a 92. L.C. Mullaly shot 103 and Ella Maples finished at 105. Adalyn Brown also played and posted a 121 for the Lady Ramblers, who finished with a team score of 300.

Gordon Lee also won the boys’ match, 329344. The Trojans got a 78 from Andrew Amor and a 79 by Ayden Cordell. Ty Davis had a nice round of 82 and Easton Yates filled out the team score with a 90. James Eldridge (93) and Ben Johnston (96) also played for the Trojans.

The Ramblers’ total included a 79 from Shane Johnston, an 82 from Hayden Bowman, an 84 from Josh Nasworthy and a 99 by Levi Stanton. Kevin Barfield (111), Nate Hines (112) and Peyton Cauthorn (116) also teed it up for LaFayette.

Also playing as individual­s for Gordon Lee were Asa Brown (89), Brennon Callahan (90), Levi Webb (93), Aiden Maxwell (98), Wil Slatton (105), Jake Seay (106) and Miles

Brock (107).

LaFayette, Gordon Lee and Heritage also played a nine-hole match at McLemore last Tuesday.

The LaFayette boys posted two scores in the 30’s and claimed a four-shot victory over Gordon Lee, while Heritage finished eight shots back.

Bowman had a 37 and Thompson shot a 38 for the Ramblers, who finished with a 165 on the afternoon. A 42 by Nasworthy and a 48 by Johnston rounded out the team score. Stanton (53) and Cauthorn (61) also played for LaFayette.

The Trojans (169) got 41’s from Cordell and Amor to go with a 42 from Yates and a 45 by Eldridge. Johnston (46), Webb (49), Davis (52) and Brown (54) also teed it up for the Navy-and-White.

The Generals (173) got a 36 from low medalist Sam Johnson. Sawyer Eaton shot a 41 for Heritage, followed by a 47 from Luke Fitzsimmon­s and a 49 from Cooper Bell. Taylor Bunn carded a 53, while Mason Davis had to withdraw before completing his round.

Also playing as individual­s for Gordon Lee were Jackson Martin (47), Callahan (49), Maxwell (50), Seay (51), Brock (56) and Slatton (60).

On the girls’ side, the Lady Trojans got 45’s from McElhaney and Williams to go with a 47 from Talley as they won the match with a score of 137.

LaFayette’s 156 included a 49 from Green, a 53 from Mullaly and a 54 from Maples. Brown shot a 56 and Tatum Myers ended the day with a 62.

Heritage shot 187 on the day. Individual scoring for the Lady Generals was not available as of press time.

Heritage’s area tournament is set for Tuesday, April 30th at Oak Mountain Golf Club in Carrollton.

OAKWOOD EDGED OUT BY UNITY

The Oakwood Christian high school golf team faced off with Unity Christian in a ninehole match at Windstone last Monday and were narrowly defeated, 203-207, in what was the last scheduled regular season match of the year for the Eagles.

J.T. Cathey and Aiden Foster both shot 49’s for OCA, while the team score was rounded out by a 52 from Ryder Ferguson and a 57 from Jaxon Chambers. John Prus (61) and Hannah Nichols (64) also teed it up for the Navy-and-Gold on Monday. Foster’s score was his personal-best for nine holes.

Oakwood also honored Cathey, a senior, during the match.

“He has been with us since we have had a golf program,” coach Phillip Foster stated. “He’s a quiet leader and helps the others be better players.”

Oakwood was scheduled to play in the GAPPS Division I qualifying tournament at Royal Oaks Golf Club in Flowery Branch on Monday of this week. The state tournament is May 6 at Bull Creek Golf Club in Midland.

The Eagles will be trying to repeat their performanc­e from last year when they finished first at Royal Lakes to qualify for state. Oakwood shot a 364 a year ago and was the only team from the tournament to qualify for state.

OCA is coming off two consecutiv­e top-five finishes at the Division I state tournament.

LFO BATTLES IN TRENTON

The LFO golf team took on Dade County at the Trenton Golf Club last Tuesday in a nine-hole match.

The Wolverines got a pair of 46’s from Mason Weathers and Kooper Knight as they beat the Warriors, 190-230. Ethan Williams and Heath Walters both shot 49 for Dade County.

Sebastian Nelson led LFO with a 50, while the rest of the team score included a 58 from Aiden Crawford, a 60 from Payton Simpson and a 62 by Nate Carter. Brody Webster and Jacob Faulk also played for the Warriors. Both finished with 64’s.
