Celina gets win over Lady Redskins

- By MIKE FRANK Sports Editor

Different day, different results.

That was the story on Tuesday as Celina defeated Wapakoneta 3- 0 in a Western Buckeye League volleyball match at the WHS gym.

The Lady Redskins had topped another green- clad team on Monday, as they beat Anna. On Tuesday, however, it was not to be.

“We struggled with serve- receieve. We were not able to get our offense going and get the ball where we wanted it,” said Wapakoneta coach Megan Hayzlett. “Because of that, we wound up with a lot of hitting errors.”

She added that the Redskins struggled to find the ball on defense. Hayzlett added that the serving did occasionally help break Celina’s momentum.

Kaleigh Palmer had eight kills and Kaylei Barnett made nine digs. Reyna Woodruff had 18 assists. The low totals “speak volumes” about the Redskins’ performance, said Hayzlett.

Wapakoneta served to open the first game. Neither side had much momentum. The Redskins eventually took an 8- 6 lead.

A serve that went long gave the ball to Celina. The Lady Redskins made plays on the next two points, but hit one long and one wide.

Wapakoneta scored two points to briefly regain the lead at 10- 9.

Celina then won eight of the next 11 rallies, with Wapakoneta continuing to hit the ball long or into the net. Now down 17- 13, the Lady Redskins called timeout.

The teams then alternated the next several points, with both scoring on the opponents’ service. Celina maintained its lead as it reached 20- 17.

The Bulldogs then scored to reclaim the serve, and Emily Schwieterman would serve out the match, with the game ending on a point as the Redskins hit the ball wide.

Scoring alternated to open the second set, with the visitors going in front 7- 5. Celina then went on a 5- 0 run to extend its advantage.

After regaining the serve, Wapakoneta put up five more points with Chloei Barnett serving and Palmer making kills on a couple of the points. That run made

it a one- point game, 12- 11.

Celina called timeout and scored three of the next five points. They then got rolling with eight straight to stretch the lead to 10 points, 23- 13.

Wapakoneta extended play for a couple points, but a tap over by the Bulldogs gave them a 2- 0 lead.

The Lady Redskins showed spirit to start the third set, as they built a 7- 3 lead. After alternating points twice, which made it 9- 5, Celina scored five straight to go up by one.

Momentum then swung back and forth, with the game tied several times. With it tied at 16, Wpakoenta scored off Celina’s serve, then added another point.

The visitors bounced back with five straight points with Chloe McNeilan on the service line.

The Lady Redskins scored three of four to get within one, 21- 20, and caused Celina to call timeout.

They would tie it at 22. Celina then scored twice. On the second of those, Wapakoneta made a couple good plays to extend the rally, but eventually hit the ball wide.

Wapakoneta got one more point before Celina closed out the game and match.
