Postseason approaches for fall

As the calendar moves into October, area fall sports teams are turning their attention to the postseason.

The football postseason, which normally begins in November after a 10- game season, will get under way this Friday. Teams played up to six games, with all teams that have chosen to participat­e being seeded based on coaches recommenda­tions.

Wapakoneta ( 2- 4) will travel to Shawnee ( 3- 3), while Waynesfiel­d-Goshen ( 4- 1) plays host to Antwerp ( 0- 6). Both games will start at 7 p. m. Tickets are limited due to restrictio­ns put in place by the state health department and the Ohio High School Athletic Associatio­n because of the ongoing COVID- 19 outbreak.

Any tickets that are available will be released at noon on Friday at the OHSAA website, ohsaa. org.

CROSS COUNTRY

The OHSAA held a board meeting last Thursday. At that meeting, they approved modificati­ons to the cross country regional and state meets.

The Division III regional races will be held on Oct. 30, with Division I and II on Oct. 31.

The state meet will be held at Fortress Obetz. Division III will run on Nov. 6, with Divisions I and II on Nov. 7

Wapakoneta competes in Division I, while Waynesfiel­d-Goshen and Botkins are in Division III.

Due to the limit of 150 runners per race, the OHSAA is seeking a variance. If it is not received, there will be two sections for each race.

League meets will be held Oct. 17. The Western Buckeye League will run at Elida. Waynesfiel­d- Goshen will host the Northwest Central Conference meet, and Botkins is the host for the Shelby County League races.

District meets will then follow on Oct. 24.

Runners from Waynesfiel­d- Goshen will compete at Columbus Grove in the Division III Northwest region. The Botkins contingent will run in Division III Southwest at Cedarville.

Wapakoneta will take part in the Division I Northwest races. Those will be held at Owens Community College in Findlay for districts and Tiffin for regionals.

GIRLS TENNIS

Wapakoneta will compete in the district meet this week. The opening rounds will be played on Thursday at Findlay, with the semifinals and finals to be held on Saturday morning.

GOLF

The Wapakoneta boys and girls will compete in sectional tournament­s today. The girls will play in the Division I Northwest tourney at Sycamore Springs Golf Course in Findlay, with the boys playing at Mohawk Golf and Country Club in Tiffin.

Waynesfiel­d- Goshen’s Chase Dunson will play in the Division III Nortthwest district tournament at Stone Ridge Golf Course in Bowling Green on Thursday morning, with a tee time of 8: 38 a. m.

Botkins will play in the Division III Southwest districts at Beavercree­k on Thursday. The Trojans will tee off at 10 a. m.

SOCCER

The Wapakoneta boys are 2- 3- 2 in the WBL and 5- 4- 3 overall. They have two games left in the regular season, both at home. They will take on Defiance this Thursday, then face Ottawa-Glandorf next Thursday. Both games will start at 5 p. m.

The Lady Redskins are 4- 2- 2 in league play and 5- 4- 5 overall. They have two games remaining in the regular season, at Ottawa-Glandorf on Tuesday and at Liberty- Benton on Thursday.

Botkins’ boys team is 5- 0 in the Western Ohio Soccer League and 9- 1- 1 overall. They will host Troy Christian on Thursday at 5 p. m., then face Lima Central Catholic on Tuesday at 5 p. m. and travel to Spencervil­le on Thursday at 7 p. m.

The Lady Trojans are 2- 2 in WOSL play and 7- 3 in all contests. They host Troy Christian on Thursday at 7 p. m. Other remaining contests are at Graham on Saturday at 10 a. m.; at home against Spencervil­le on Tuesday at 7 p. m. and at Lima Central Catholic on Oct. 17 at 10 a. m.

The tournament draw will be held Oct. 11, with the sectional tournament running from Oct. 19- 24, followed by districts, regionals and state. The state finals are set for Nov. 13- 14. OHSAA stated at its board of directors meeting last week that the host site, MAPFRE Stadium in Columbus, may or may not host the games.

VOLLEYBALL

Wapakoneta is currently tied for fourth in the WBL with a record of 4- 3. They are 10- 6 overall with four matches left in the regular season. They will visit Defiance on Thursday. Next week, they will host Waynesfiel­d-Goshen on Monday and travel to Ottawa-Glandorf on Tuesday. The season finale will be Thursday when they host Spencervil­le. All matches start at 5: 30 with junior varsity, followed by the varsity contest.

Waynesfiel­d- Goshen is 3- 3 in NWCC matches, and 6- 10 overall. The Lady Tigers will next visit Ridgemont on Thursday. Next week, they will be at Wapakoneta on Monday, host Pandora-Gilboa on Tuesday, host Lehman Catholic on Thursday, and end with a home match against Riverdale on Oct. 17. All matches will be at 5: 30 p. m., except the last one. The Riverdale match will be Senior Day and JV play will start at 10 a. m.

The Botkins volleyball squad has five matches left in the regular season. They will host Fairlawn on Thursday, and visit Upper Scioto Valley on Saturday at 10 a. m.

Next week’s slate includes contests at Russsia on Tuesday, the home finale against Troy Christian on Thursday, and at Fairlawn on Friday. Besides USV, all matches begin at 5: 30 p. m. with JV.

The postseason seeding will be held Oct. 11. The sectional tournament begins Oct. 19. Sectionals and regionals will follow. The state tournament is set for Nov. 12- 14. The host site of Wright State University has not been finalized.
