Fort Recovery shuts down Redskins

- By MIKE FRANK Sports Editor

The neighboring tribe didn’t bring presents — just defense.

Wapakoneta had few answers at either end of the court on Tuesday, as they lost 47- 26 to Fort Recovery in nonleague girls basketball at the WHS gym.

The Indians jumped ahead at the start and gradually built a lead of 10 after one quarter and 17 points by halftime. The teams were closer in scoring in the second half, but that meant that Fort Recovery was able to maintain its advantage.

The Lady Redskins were held to just nine points in the first half, and did not score more than 10 in any period. Fort Recovery used its size to disrupt Wapakoneta’s offensive flow, creating a number of turnovers.

Casey Minnig and Allie Wilson each had seven points for Wapakoneta.

Fort Recovery was led by Kierra Wendel with 12 points and Paige Fortkamp with 10.

The Indians took a lead on a basket by Brenna Homan and a three by Wendel. Minnig scored the first

Redskins basket with 4 1/ 2 minutes to go in the period.

After a second- effort score by Fortkamp, Wilson hit a shot to make it 7- 4 with just over two minutes to play.

After Fort Recovery extended the lead to six, Fortkamp hit two shots from 3- point range, the the second with just a couple seconds remaining. Alyssa Harrod scored in between for Wapakoneta,

who trailed 16- 6 going to the second period.

Minnig made a free throw in the early going. Fort Recovery spent most of the period disrupting Wapakoneta’s flow on offense and extending its lead with a few scores. A three by Homan with 3: 30 to play made it 22- 7.

Minnig would score the only other points for Wapakoneta about a minute later. Following a miss by Fort Recovery, the shooter grabbed the rebound and fed Grace Guggenbiller for a score. Another basket by Alli Vaughn made the score 26- 9 at intermission.

Wapakoneta showed signs of life to start the second half. Katie Lisi hit a shot and Minnig followed with a putback. But Fort Recovery responded with a 6- 0 run over the next three minutes.

Wilson and Nikane Ambos made shots as the quarter wound down. Wendel then made a steal and took it for a layup.

The clock was stopped with 2 1/ 2 seconds left, with Fort Recovery taking the ball out at the end opposite its basket. They rolled the ball in to save time. Wendel scooped it up after it crossed halfcourt, took a couple of dribbles, and let fly. The shot banked home at the buzzer to make it a 20- point margin, 37- 17.

Fort Recovery added to its tally in the fourth quarter, while Wapakoneta did not get a score until Wilson hit a 3- pointer with 2: 43 to go. Taylor Jenkins and Abby Metzger also hit shots from behind the arc before time ran out.
