100 YEARS AGO, DECEMBER 29, 1920

For the most part local merchants have cleaned up their after- Christmas work such as arranging their depleted stocks and in general lining things up after the strenuous Christmas rush, Clerks in the various stores have been kept busy this week because of the many articles, too large or too small or not satisfacto­ry, brought in for exchange.

CANDY— Our candy came in the day after Christmas, and so we are selling it out at cost. Come and see us. The H. W. Taeusch & Sons Co.

Several small urchins interviewe­d by a Daily News representa­tive imparted the informatio­n that they have declared a boycott on local dealers so far as rags are concerned. The representa­tive caught them at an opportune time when they were filling their ragbags with rags at a local tailor shop. “We’re going to hold these rags until the price goes to a half center per pound,” said they. According to them only a quarter cent a pound is being paid at the present time. There is a good market for the cast off bits of cloth— especially if they are of good quality and clean.,

According to the quarterly report sent to the state board of agricultur­e by Duchouquet Township Clerk Joe Fisher, there were 648 hunting and trapping licenses issued in the township so far this year.

75 YEARS AGO, DECEMBER 29, 1945

Mrs. Philomena Louise Metzger Brown, 61, wife of Ferd Brown, prominent hog breeder, residing east of Wapakoneta, died December 27 at St. Rita’s Hospital. She is survived by her husband and 10 children, and 24 surviving grandchild­ren. Always of a kindly dispositio­n and interested in the welfare of her family and children, Mrs. Brown leaves a heritage of a fine memory for all who knew her.

The Wapakoneta Area Chamber of Commerce, the Wapakoneta Garden Club, and the Men’s Garden Club today announced winners in the outdoor Christmas decoration­s contest. House and Yard— Bill Mccormick, 502 Jackson ( 1); John Waldman, 412 Defiance ( 2). House— Edwin Kleinhenz, 110 Valley View ( 1); Leon Goeke, 714 W. Benton ( 2); Tom Harrison, 808 W. Auglaize ( 3); James Harrison, Nottingham Drive, and Oliver Kuck, 1012 W. Auglaize ( honorable mention). Doorway— Ed Horman, 805 W. Vine ( 1); Ronald Kennedy, 402 E. Pearl ( 2); Alfred Zink, 407 Defiance ( 3); and Paul Hardin, 602 S. Rauthland ( honorable mention). Religious— John Seitz, 410 E. Auglaize ( 1); and David Hassenauer, 515 Wagner ( 2).

 Don Mann, son of MM Ronald Mann, Route 2, ranked 4th in a field of 1431 Ohio high school seniors who took the Agricultur­al Competitiv­e Scholarshi­p Examinatio­n at Ohio State University. Mann scored 133 of a possible 150. The highest score in the state was 137.

25 YEARS AGO, DECEMBER 29, 1995

Lady Skins coach Mark Koch will tell you that the key to his team’s success lies with its post players. The front court proved its value last night as Jessica Steinke and Alisha Place combined for 31 points and 21 rebounds as Wapakoneta rolled over host Tippecanoe 6234 in the first round of the Tipp City Holiday Tournament, Wapakoneta, now 4- 4- on the year, will take on Cincinnati St. Ursula tonight for the tournament championsh­ip.
